Biography

Lena was born in 1865. Her birth record gives a name of Ellena Zanoni, and that her father, registering the birth was billiard maker, named Vincent Zanoni from Switzerland. Her mother is given as Elena Totten, originally from Ireland, who had married her father in 1862.

In 1871, Lena and her two siblings were brought up for protection by the Court, as a result of their mother being taken into custody for vagrancy, and their father, a seaman, having deserted them. The two girls were taken to the Industrial School at Biloels and their brother was sent to the Vernon receiving ship. They were 6, 4 and 2 and a half years old when this happened, Lena being the eldest of the three judging by her date of birth.

Lena appears to have then been at Parramatta Training School, and was discharged from there in 1880. The name on the school register is Ellen Lind Annie Zenoni. Her next destination appears to have been in East Maitland.

On 16 February 1898 Lena was married to Frederick William Blanch. Frederick was a wheelwright and died in 1919 intestate.

She passed away in 1952 and was buried at Sandgate Cemetery in Newcastle.
