Wilhelm was born in 1838. He was the son of Johann Ziegler and Auguste Knöll.[1]
He was listed in the 1861 Detroit city directory as: "Ziegler Wm, tin smith, 35 Laf E."[2]
William (as he was listed in regimental records) enlisted in the 24th Michigan Infantry on Aug. 4, 1862 (enrolled as a private).[3] He was a corporal at the time of his death.[4]
William was missing in action (determined killed) in the Battle of Gettysburg, 1 July 1863.[5] He was a member of the color guard.[6] He would have been buried as an unknown soldier at Gettysburg.[7]
