How do you find out if your family member was in a Institution?

The census has institution data you just enter a year location and given name.
For which country?

If they were in a residential institution at the time of an enumeration in the US, they will be shown there.  Otherwise, I would think you would need to review the records of the suspected institution.

Some states do produce records of transfers from hospitals to institutions like sanitariums. I just found records recently in Ohio like that, so I'd suspect there might be other states doing something similar.
