Research Notes
Douglas Richardson documents a trail for Gateway Ancestor John Bevan to Surety Baron Richard de Clare in his 2011 Magna Carta Ancestry.[1] Joan (de Audley) Tuchet is in that trail. She is also documented in Richardson's Royal Ancestry, as a descendant of William the Conqueror.[2]
This profile had been identified as being part of that trail, protected and managed by the Magna Carta Project, until 9 May 2024, when the project removed Bevan's trail (see this changes page for Bevan-62).
Explanation: "John is listed by Douglas Richardson as a Gateway Ancestor descended from Surety Baron Richard de Clare.[4][1] The alleged line of descent is though not reliably sourced, and rests essentially on unsourced old pedigrees. In the absence of firmer evidence, including for his mother and for his suggested mother's parentage, the Magna Carta Project is not accepting him as a Magna Carta Gateway. One source for the line of descent is a compilation of Welsh pedigrees made in the first half of the 19th century (MS 11964 held by the National Library of Wales), and this is not sufficient to give secure sourcing. Old pedigrees like these often contain significant errors." ~ Michael Cayley, co-leader, Magna Carta Project, 9 May 2024

Profiles 14+ are badged in a trail to a different Gateway; the Magna Carta Project removed both the unbadged Bevan trail and John Bevan as a Gateway Ancestor on 9 May 2024. The "Explanation" in this profile is the first paragraph from the "Lineage" section of John Bevan's profile (as of 9 May 2024).

update - the Magna Carta Project removed Bevan's trail (see this changes page for Bevan-62), although he is a in a trail to Surety Baron Richard de Clare documented by Douglas Richardson in his 2011 Magna Carta Ancestry (I:190-192 BEVAN; see also I:xxiii-xxix "List of Colonial Immigrants").
