Melissa was born about 1843. She was the daughter of William Beller and his wife. Both parents die prior to 1850 and a question surrounds his mother as it is not clear if Martha (Wilburn) Beller who married William Beller ca 1821 in Alabama is the same person as Lovina Beller, the recorded spouse of William who died 1850 in Arkansas (see Martha's profile for details).
Melissa and her brother David become wards of their older sister Manerva and husband George Baker, whom they accompany on a migration to California. However, the family does not arrive at their destination, instead being victims of an attack known as the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Melissa perished during that attack sometime between September 7 and 11, 1857.
