Biography

William C. Beller was born 7 Feb 1799 in North Carolina the son of Eli and Mary Campbell Beller. As an adult he moved first to Alabama, married and established a family. From there William, along with his brother Peter and their families, arrived in Arkansas in the spring of 1833.[1] It was soon after that Arkansas became a state and William a leading citizen of the area. In Goodspeed's History of Carroll County, William Beller is listed as treasurer from 1838-1842.[2]

"William C. Beller was one of the most prominent men in Crooked Creek Township (Boone County, Arkansas). He owned substantial property, and was a slaveholder. He was also a merchant who operated a store near his home called Beller's Stand; he was a Carroll County Treas., County Clerk, and the Crooked Creek postmaster for several years. The Beller's homestead was located a short distance southeast of Milam Spring also called Caravan Spring." ~ Robert Lewis Taylor [3]

Marriage & Children
It is likely that there are two wives/mothers for the fifteen children attributed to William Campbell Beller. From the marriage record for William and Martha Wilburn, to the death information for Lovina Beller, the dearth of information does not clearly provide the detail needed to assume the same person is represented in both instances, marriage and death. The list below is broken into two parts to reflect this possibility. The first part are children born in Alabama, and the second part are children born in Arkansas:

  1. Alabama (likely Martha Wilburn m. 9 Mar 1821 in Madison County, Alabama[4])
    1. Mary Francis (Beller) Baines 1821-1911
    2. George William Beller 1824-1853
    3. Martha Jane (Beller) Greer 1826-1908
    4. William Campbell Beller 1828-1863
    5. Eli Beller 1830-1843
    6. Minerva Ann (Beller) Baker* 1832-1857
    7. Elizabeth C (Beller) Grace 1834-1916
  2. Arkansas (possibly Lovina unknown)
    1. Ervin E Beller 1836-1911
    2. Amanda Melvina (Beller) Baker/DeShazo 1839-1923
    3. Louisina M. (Beller) DeShazo/Andrews 1842-1911
    4. Melissa A. Beller* 1843-1857
    5. David W. Beller* 1845-1857
    6. James P.S. Beller 1847-1939
    7. Lovina Beller (twin) 1849-1849
    8. Garrett Greer Beller (twin) 1849-1914
* William's third daughter Minerva, along with her husband George Baker and family, would take her sister Melissa and brother David on a wagon train to California. However the Baker-Fancher Party was ambushed and the Baker's along with Melissa and David would parish at Mountain Meadows, Utah in September 1857.

William died in early 1850 during a smallpox epidemic. His wife Lovina and newborn daughter, also named Lovina, preceding him in death early that year from the hard birth of the twins.[5] The children who were not already married were taken in by their sister Martha and husband Garrett Greer.[6]
