Biography

I was born 12/15/1946 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I lived in the same house in East Grand Rapids until I graduated from college. I went to Wealthy Elementary School and East Grand Rapids High School (1960-64).

The April 1950 U.S. Census shows me living at 612 Laurel Ave. in East Grand Rapids, Michigan at age 3 with father Robert (33), a newspaper editor (Grand Rapids Press), mother Ellen (32), brother Tom (8) and sister Blakeslee (6).[1]

I went to Lawrence University in Appleton, WI, from 1964-1969, graduating with a BA in Anthropology and a minor in Psychology.

I moved to Madison, WI in 1970, working at various jobs while evaluating what direction to take with my life.

I learned the Transcendental Meditation technique in October of 1973 and went to Cobb Mt. CA in June of 1975 to begin training to become a teacher of the technique, meeting my future wife Tiffany Wallace at the course. I completed my teacher training in March of 1976 in Anglet, France, near Biarritz.

Tiffany and I were married on the front porch of my family cottage on Lake Michigan at Sylvan Beach, MI on 9/4/1976. Tiffany left in November to further her TM teacher training, while I returned to Grand Rapids to help care for my father who was discovered to have cancer of the stomach that had spread to the liver, giving him less than 6 months to live.

We returned to Madison, where our three daughters were born. I worked as a Budget and Management Analyst and then Manager for the Dept. of Labor, Dept. of Administration, and the Wisconsin Supreme Court, as well as Operations Manager for the Secretary of State.

We moved to Lexington, KY in 1995, where I worked until 2013 as Budget Manager for an anti-poverty organization which included the Head Start Program.

I now live in Fairfield, IA with Tiffany and find great enjoyment in pursuing ancestry. Like many others, I wish I had paid more attention in my youth to the older generations discussing such matters. I love working with WikiTree and finding many unexpected connections around the globe.

I chose the photo of the channel to Ullapool, Scotland as my primary photo because of the immediate emotional connection I felt upon seeing the photo of this home of my Cameron ancestors, who emigrated to America.

It is great to hear from you, John. When I first joined Wikitree I uploaded a gedcom, and unfortunately none of the sources migrated. Please feel free to improve on the skimpy profile for James Blake Blake-2878. I will make you the profile manager if you like.

Hi Anne,

Sorry for the delay. You can remove me if you wish, as I'm pursuing many lines and can't find much more in the Mayflower lines. I'm happy to keep at it sporadically, but it may be a while. So I'm happy if you continue me as a member. Thanks, John

We're happy to keep you in the project. We just like to know people are engaged enough to answer this checkin. Thank you.

P.S. If links do not work in an email from WikiTree, try them from the comment section on your profile page.

Thanks, Laura. I'll be very careful with the sources. I'm transferring work from Ancestry and will be filling in sources for more recent ancestors after I get more of the folks transferred. If I'm unsure with a pre-1700 source I'll be sure and ask before I do anything. Wiki and Wikipedia pages were very helpful to me when working in Ancestry.

Hi John,

You’ve been here about a week now so I thought I’d check in with you to see how it’s going. Is the How-Tos helping?

Give me a shout if you have any questions.
