I have been researching my family for 50 years and am looking forward to retirement when I can spend even more time on my research. I started out by asking my grandparents questions, and then in college got really serious about my research. My children grew up visiting cemeteries, historical and genealogical societies, and older family members so I could continue to research. I'm hoping through my collaboration on WikiTree that I might be able to break through a few brick walls, help others with their research and make connections with other family members.

Donna, have you seen this "Sons of the American Revolution Membership Application"?

Ancestry Sharing Link …… Ancestry Record 2204 #469241

Thanks, Bill. I'm not sure if I've seen this particular record before, but I have eliminated this James Young as mine for several reasons. First, my James Young was married 7 Feb 1852 in Pine Grove, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania, to Elizabeth Hubler. Second, this James Young and Elizabeth Redsecker Young were having children together after the date of my James's and Elizabeth's marriage. This family also seems to have been more well to do than mine and owned land and were businessmen while mine were mostly laborers and coal miners. I know I have checked more records on James and Elizabeth Redsecker Young which ruled them out from being my ancestors, but haven't had a chance to update Wikitree with everything.

Here's the thing. This SSAR application assumes that the James Young in Middletown, Dauphin County was the son of Peter Young on Berks County. Without any supporting ties that is a huge leap of faith. Maybe he was, but your ancestor James Young was in Schuylkill County which is much closer to Berks County, and he enlisted in Reading, PA which is the county seat of Berks County. The ages of the two men name James Young are very close. How do we know which James Young was the son of Peter Young? I had a better handle on this research a couple of days ago. I had found some more interesting similarities between the family of Peter Young and your ancestor James Young, but I can't find that info now. Your James Young had attended school according to the 1860 Census, which means his family must have had some money, even though he was a laborer. Where was he in 1850 as I can find no record of him that year?

Also, after many years of research I have a natural distrust of oral history. People made up stories as excuses for their family members, or at least often stretched the truth. The family information about James Young after the war doesn't seem to hold water as there is nothing to support it. James Young must have owned land in Schuylkill County. What happened to that land. When was it sold, by whom, and to whom? There must be land and tax records in PA which would shed more light upon the whereabouts and activity of James Young. I live in NJ, too far away to do that research, but I have researched there and know that many good land records and tax records are available. We need to find those records to make any headway.

Here is another interesting family, also in Berks County.
1850: Exeter, Berks County, Pennsylvania
Daniel Young, 52, farmer
Mary Young, 43
Lovina Young, 26
Albert Young, 17
Barbary A Young, 16
William Young, 13
Jacob Young, 12
Geo Washington Young, 10
Sarah Young, 6
Daniel Young, 3

Look how similar the name of those children are to those of James Young. William, George, and Barbara are children in both families.

Once again, land records in Berks County could be of great help.
