Biography

I was born in 1959 in Summerside, PEI, Canada, the youngest of 6 children. There is quite an age gap in my family as my eldest sister was 22 years older than me (well actually as it turns out my eldest half sister is 25 years older than me). Indeed she was already married and raising a family of her own when I was born. In 1961 my dad was transferred to Canadian Forces Base ("CFB") Comox on Vancouver Island. So I grew up in the beautiful Comox Valley.

The Comox Valley is known for its numerous outdoor activities. Ski slopes, swimming holes, salmon fishing, hunting areas, camp grounds, sandy beaches and several hiking trails are all located in or within a short distance of the Valley. But I was a nerdy geek who generally enjoyed reading and playing board games over these more strenuous activities. I am a sorry excuse for a Canadian who never learned to either skate or ski. The one exception to my otherwise dormant life is that I was an avid road hockey, floor hockey and later ball hockey player.

After graduation from High School I attended the University of Victoria where I obtained both my BA and LLB and met and fell in love with my wife. After law school we moved to Maple Ridge, BC when I began my legal career and where we have raise our family of 2 girls and 1 boy.

My interest in genealogy was sparked at an early age. My Mom comes from a large family of 13 children and every decade or so there was a Roberts Family Reunion held somewhere in British Columbia. At these reunions each family member was issued a copy of the "Blue Book". The Blue Book recorded various information about the Roberts family including family history, records of all marriages and births of the descendants of my maternal grandparents and an Appendix containing the family tree and obituaries of some ancestors. To my shame, I have always been more interested in my dead ancestors than I have been in my living cousins. I have (or had as many are now deceased) 44 first cousins on the Roberts side of my family alone; but I have little or no contact with any of them and if pushed could probably only give you the names of a dozen of them at most. Yet I could easily rattle off the names of 50+ of my ancestors. In my defense, I grew up geographically distant from most of my cousins and they are almost all quite a bit older than me. But still, it is a bit sad.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the message about DNA and I am not sure I can help very much as you are already able to find your matches and create the confirmation statements. One suggestion I have is to upload your Ancestry test to My Heritage and/or FamilyTreeDNA in order to find more matches for those 4th, 5th cousin matches. Both of those websites have chromosome browsers to do the triangulation. Having said that, triangulation is not easy but certainly can be done. Under the Help menu here on WT there is an explanation for it and if you Google DNA Triangulation you will see Robert Estes' blog - here is the link: https://dna-explained.com/2020/12/16/triangulation-resources-in-one-place/. There are a lot of other great links displayed on the Google search.

Keep in mind when you get out to 4th cousin and beyond, the inheritance becomes more sparse and you will not match the same amount of DNA as some of your other relatives. I had to use either my aunt or a first cousin to triangulate for one of my 2x great grandparents as I did not have that piece of DNA. My aunt and cousin did have it.

Good luck and I suggest that you ask in G2G as you go as there are some really excellent members who will help.

Hello Bob,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.
