Visiting Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, I came across a Scotsman blowing his bagpipes, dressed up in his official tartan national dress of Scotland.  Not only did he look the part he played the part...over and over again.

by Scott Lee G2G6 Mach 6 (60.2k points)
Scott thank you for sharing this wonderful photo
Scott....such a wonderful photo as Susan commented.....it is with amazement that I noticed you visited Peggy's Cove near the Seabright home of my Scottish maternal ancestors when in '73 I visited the Oregon Caves in your home area of Cave Junction while attending a Sunbeam Tiger Convention in Grants Pass.
These kilt outfits can be very expensive, but well worth it if you are a piper. This one looks like a particularly excellent combination. It's always nice to hear the pipes. Thank you for sharing.
If I had an extra 100 grand I wouldn't mind driving the mountain roads in Sunbeam Tiger!  l did have a TR2 when I was in High School.  About killed myself in that little roadster!  Yep, I would ride my bike up the highway as far as my little legs would push the pedals and then once we reached the Caves turn around and it was all downhill to the farm!

Scott, I really liked red TR3s with wire wheels and once test drove an early model in Stanley Park......with the cut down doors, if I remember correctly, I could put my hand on the road.  My Tiger was in race trim when I drove up to the Caves, reaching the top ahead of the rest.  I drove down aways and upon meeting them led the way back up in reverse (geared for 60 mph @ 5000 RPM).  I thought my girlfriend was laughing hilariously...... until I realized she was screaming......the Caves were spectacular......I'm sure I have photos to look for. smiley

When I was growing up, "dressing up" meant shoes and socks and the newest of the cotton dresses my grandmother had made. (In the third grade I  surprised to learn that some people bought clothes in a store!) So this picture of my mother-in-law, Henrietta Kaufmann, always amazes me. Her mother was a widow without a lot of money. But for Henrietta's confirmation, she went all out. The dress is fancier than my wedding gown! The button-up shoes! Lace stockings! The fan! The parasol! What, I wonder, did Henrietta do while wearing all this finery?

by Joyce Vander Bogart G2G6 Pilot (199k points)
Thank you, Joyce, for this lovely photo. Henrietta looks perfect!
Joyce what a cute photo of your mother in law she look adorable

I love the photo thank you for sharing
Joyce what a great photo love the outfit.
I am truly lovin' this photo Joynce!  Just wondering how things turned out for Henrietta in her life.  Perhaps the stage?  One great photo and thanks for posting it for us to enjoy!
Joyce....such a work of art....her mother was amazing....this photo inspired me to attempt to post one of my aunt Nora.
She is beautiful. I have a picture of my grandmother in a chair with the same decorative swirls.

When I was growing up, "dressing up" meant shoes and socks and the newest of the cotton dresses my grandmother had made.

Joyce, Are we related!? laugh I am from southern New Jersey, and that is how I grew up in the 70s! BUT my “special” dress up (like 8th grade graduation) was a fancier dress that my grandmom made. smiley I got a great smile from this! Thank you for sharing. And thank you for sharing the lovely photo of your mother-in-law in her beautiful outfit!

Missy heart

No, Scott, Henrietta must not have had many chances to dress up like this. She left school after the 8th grade and went to work in the phone company. After she retired, she went back to school and earned a high school diploma when she was 72.

Missy, thanks for the comment. My first "dress up" dress was the one my grandmother made for my 8th grade graduation. But I got the mumps and did not get to wear it then.

Hard to believe, but this picture shows my paternal grandmother, Emma Auguste Reher as a 14 year old girl in 1907.
She is dressed up for her religious confirmation Eastern 1907 in Leezen, Schleswig-Holstein, Geman Empire.

by Dieter Lewerenz G2G Astronaut (3.1m points)
Dieter thank you for sharing this wonderful photo of your grandmother

And she is only 14 years old. She look gorgeous
My mother was a member of the Eastern Star however I don't think that Emma's "Eastern" has to do with that,  too young, and more French than German origin, so I suppose Eastern means Easter 1907?  Thanks for posting her photo for us.

Sorry, I don't know what you mean with Eastern Star.

And yes, you are right I mean Easter. My english is not perfect. crying

The General Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, affiliated with the Masons.  "Charity, Truth and Loving Kindness", founder Rob Morris.  Female relatives of Master Masons.
She is very pretty and looks more like 18 to 20 years old. What a great photo to have.
I love this photo!

My maiden name is Reher.  My Great-grandparents were Johann and Sophie Vogt Reher.  My Grandfather, Ernest, was about 9 mo. Old when the immigrated to the United States along with Johann's brother, Christian.  Another brother, Max joined then in Nebraska later.  They grew up in the Bad Segeberg area of Schleswig Holstein.

I wonder if we are related?

This is a photo taken April 1911 of a Civic Center Costume Party.   All three are women!   My grandmother Pearl McCleery is on the right dressed up as a child. She is actually 24 when this photo was taken, and I used another photo from this same party two years ago for Dress Up.

by Alexis Nelson G2G6 Pilot (853k points)
Another wonderful photo, Alexis. It's amazing -- all three look like children. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you Robin; we both had ancestors in Oklahoma in 1907 when it first became a state. I think this photo is interesting because they had the party to raise money to build a library in Okmulgee, OK.  I can not imagine living in a place so new that they did not even have a library.
Alexis magnificent photo wow they are all girls they look adorable

I would never thought the one in the middle was a girl

Thank you for sharing another wonderful photo
Thank you Susan for your wonderful comment. I have a couple of other photos of my grandmother and her friends dressed as men. It must have been a fun thing to do back then.
Thanks Alexis!  So great to have a photo of your grandmother at this age having fun at a costume party!  Particularly cool is her friend (sis?) scolding her teddy!  I called mine 'Elmer' and my youngest daughter (43) still takes care of him for me!  Thanks for sharing this adorable photo!
Scott that is so great that you have your teddy bear. What a treasure!
They look like the are having fun at their party.  I like that the 2 girls in front left their hair down.
Thank you Stacie for your comment about their hair. All the photos of my grandmother after her early teens show her with her hair up until the 1920s. I love seeing how long her hair actually was. Her friend on the left certainly has too much hair to get it under a cap like her friend in back did.

This photo is of my brother and his wife on their wedding day. Though my brother was born and raised in California he has become Texan through and through having lived there for the past 40 years. For their wedding they chose to dress up as old time Texans.

The entire wedding party was dressed similarly, even the ring boy and flower girl.  They were married on 31 Dec 1988.

by Robin Shaules G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Robin what a adorable photo of your brothers wedding day

They both look amazing

Thank you for sharing this wonderful photo
What a great photo, sounds like a wonderful theme for a Texas wedding.
Don't Mess With Texas!...and I can't imagine the party after they got 'hitched'!  Thanks for posting another great family photo for 'dress up' Robin!
Robin.....I keep returning to view this photo.....I think it says it all!
What a fun theme, very Texan.  I bet the a great party after the wedding.
Thank you Susan, Emily, Scott, John, and Stacie for your wonderful comments. They all made me smile.

Dress up and keep spirits up!

These two fine chaps, believe it or not, are Prisoners of War in Nazi Germany. Possibly held in Stalag XX A or Stalag 383, they are putting on a performance of Dick Whittington. My step great-grandfather possessed the photo although I don't know if he took it; no-one thought to ask him whilst he was alive.

And, if it wasn't obvious because of that brilliant costume, that fine 'lady' on the left is a male soldier packed with all the pillow stuffing the backstage team could get their hands on. (The rehearsal pictures are possibly even more hilarious.)

by David Smith G2G6 Mach 7 (77.5k points)
Oh Oh the competition is getting tough with this post!  Hogan's Heroes!  I am just writing a bio on a person that was captured by the Germans during WWII.  He didn't dress up as far as I know but he did steal a german jeep and escaped to freedom!  What a great pic a family treasure for sure.  Thanks for posting David!
Wow, it is had to think of prisoners putting on plays. I wonder how long it took them to make the costumes. That is a picture to treasure for the family, a great moment in history.

The Barr brothers. Steve, Denny, Jerry (my grandfather), Jack, and Chris; dressed up nice for a family photo.

by Brendon Barr G2G3 (3.9k points)
edited by Brendon Barr
Great photo Brendon!  Four out of five got glasses.  I always look at that because I was very near-sighted growing up and always wore glasses,,,sometimes chewed up  by my puppy.  My big brother had perfect eyesight and still does.  Thanks for posting!
Great looking brothers, I have Barr in my line. My Barr are from North Carolina and Mississippi.

Brendon,  Even though I had brothers, fate had it I was brought up as an only child.  Looking deeper into the brothers I see something in common in the family, twins and the nickname 'Jack' and then a common ancestor Margaret Crackenthorpe with sources on one of her husbands and then her father Anthony with a book load of sources on the Crackenthorpe family that solves the other lines I've been working on......who knows if I ever would have found the information otherwise......Thankyou for sharing the Barr brothers! smiley

This is my maternal Great-Grandmother Ora Belle (McCance) Haeber doing dress-up for the camera. Ca. 1915 Nebraska

by Jared Crayk G2G6 Mach 1 (16.7k points)
Ora Belle was quite fashionable; ready to hit the town!  Much need attire on the cold windy Nebraska days!  Thanks Jared!
Jared, I find the colour of the photo also adds another attractive touch.
She is beautiful and I love how dressed up she is. She didn't do it half way, she went all out.
Thanks everyone.
Jared your grandmother are absolutely adorable what a great looking lady thank you for sharing this wonderful photo
A gorgeous photo, and a beautiful young woman. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you Susan and Robin

This is my husband's cousin Bill Asbrey dressed up for his graduation from Oxford University in 1949. He never married and had a strong relationship with his college all his life, when he died he left most of his estate to the college which used it to fund a scholarship and to purchase a house for student accommodation.

Thank you Gillian for sharing your photo of Bill and his story of his legacy of being able to help other students. He certainly is a handsome young man.
Oxford remains at the top in world-wide universities..cousin Asbrey certainly had something to do with that!  Something to ''dress up'' for, that's for sure!  Thanks for posting Gillian!
Great photo and story, thank you for sharing.
Gillian what a magnificent photo of your husband cousin

He look gorgeous amazing he never married,

Thank you for sharing this wonderful photo

My grandmother, Oma M Allison-Rammel (1895-1995), and her aunt, Mildred "Mid" Irene Omelia-Harrington (1890-1934) are all "Dressed-up".  Not sure of the occasion.

There was only 5 years difference in the ages of Oma and her Aunt Mid.  Based on their appearances, it is a reasonable guess that the photo was taken about 1913.

by Bill Sims G2G6 Pilot (126k points)
Bill, I spent some time studying the detail in the photo as I often try to bring myself back to imagine what it was like to live in that time.....of note is their close age difference......reminds me of my youngest daughter and oldest grand daughter growing up a year apart.
Me thinks that it is Mother's Day..?  The Carnations may tell the story here Bill.  Love the photo and the family memory.  Thanks for posting!
I like the hats. I think they look so pretty.
Bill what a cute photo of your grandmother and aunt they are both adorable

I absolutely adore there outfits

Thank you for sharing

Aunt Nora was born in British Columbia in 1909 while her parents were journeying to the Okanagan to retire and homestead. This photo was probably taken some time after returning to Cheltenham, England to enroll my father in Royal Navy officer's training prior to WWI. The costume mirrors the photo I have seen of her mother at a picnic in Potsdam.

by John Thompson G2G6 Pilot (353k points)
Thank you John for sharing your wonderful photo of your Aunt Nora. She has beautiful hair with her thick braids. She is darling!
I love this photo of Nora!  I'm thinking Aunt Nora has a part time job in an Okanagan Winery..she is about ready to take your order!  Great 'dress up' photo to share John. Thank You!
John your aunt Nora are adorable thank you for sharing
Thankyou, Alexis, with your help I've been able to, now, get the photos to the space page.
Susan,  I've always been fond of this photo.....I think of it as having a European style.
Scott,  My father did return to the Okanagan in the '30s where he acquired an apple orchard.......Nora married Rupert Lockhart of the British Secret Service and went on to South Africa and Ceylon......spies......I was told to keep it under my hat.  She sent me stamps for my collection and I have letters from her to her mother discussing world affairs while in employ of 'the Firm'.
You are right John it has a European style like Austria

This is Ellie Teresa Franks/Smith born 1884 in Mexicaand died 1973 Corpus Christi, Nueces, Texas. I picked this one because I haven't seen hair done quite like this in any other photos. The flowers are so pretty and she looks so proper and poised.

by Stacie Briggs G2G6 Mach 2 (30.0k points)
Thank you Stacie for sharing Ellie; she is lovely with her perfect hair with flowers in it. Such a wonderful photo with being able to see the details in her gorgeous lace dress.
Could this be her wedding photo?  Ellie looks like she could have been a teacher or librarian.  Whatever road her life took her down, she knew how to 'dress up' for a photo during the turn of the century.  I prefer the 1940s ladies hairstyles.  Thanks for posting Stacie!
I chose this one because of her hair and the flowers. I haven't seen a hairdo like this before.
Scott it could be a wedding photo, but it doesn't say it is. I thought she looked like a teacher as well, she looks very proper and sweet.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful photo what a gorgeous hair style I wonder how long it would take

She really are cute

This photo was taken in my flat in Stepney, London, England in 1977 when we all dressed up in the national colours for Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee. I am on the left my friend and work colleague Daphne Morgan in the middle and my Mum on the right.

by Christine Frost G2G6 Pilot (153k points)
Thank you Christine for sharing your beautiful photo. You all three are lovely, and you look like you are having a great time.
A milestone....over 70 years on the throne!  You are dressed to kill Christine and love the belt and hat too!  Thanks for posting this memory for all of us!
Thank you Christine for sharing this wonderful photo

You look amazing all of you

In the first grade I was lucky to be placed in the class of Mrs. Lorraine Weitz.  Mrs. Weitz was legendary for the class plays that she produced every spring and no one could tell her that her first graders might not be quite ready for Broadway.  The year I was with her, we did The Wizard of Oz and I was Good Witch Glinda.  Any disappointment that I had about not being cast as Dorothy disappeared when I saw the amazing gown that my mother found for me.  I felt so fancy!!

by Betsy Ko G2G6 Pilot (145k points)
I loved the story and the photo, thanks for sharing!

You have no power here! Begone, before somebody drops a house on you, too!   What a great memory Betsy Ko and thanks for posting.

You look fancy, I love that she was a teacher that believed in he students.

This is my mother, Lucille Dawson (Ceruti) when she was all dressed up in her cap and gown for her high-school graduation photo. She was valedictorian of her class at age 15.

by Marion Ceruti G2G6 Pilot (360k points)
I couldn't even spell the word valedictorian or even knew what one was when I was 15!  Smart, attractive and what else Marion...a great mother, best of all!  Thanks for posting her photo!
Marion what a magnificent photo of your mother m what a beautiful lady your mother are

Thank you for sharing
Thank you Scott and Susan for your kind words about my mother. She was very beautiful and also smart about words - meaning and spelling. I spelled "valedictorian" incorrectly before I finally got it right, but one thing my mother taught me was, "A quitter never wins and a winner never quits." I doesn't matter about the mistakes you make along the way as long as the product come out exceptional.

1912 Halloween party for a choir that my great-grandaunt, Elizabeth Koehnline, attended at the house of an Arthur Bagg, presumably another member of the choir. This was probably taken in Wheeling, WV, but could possibly be in DC; I'm not sure. Elizabeth is second from the right on the very bottom, in the frilly cap. I don't know the identities of anyone else in the photo, except that I assume Bagg is probably somewhere in there.

Cool pic and two thumbs up for a spectacular 'dress up' photo.  Thanks for posting Thomas!

Three generations of ladies all dressed up together.

by John Thompson G2G6 Pilot (353k points)
John, this is beautiful and appears to be a wonderful keepsake. Thank you for sharing it.
Thankyou, Robin, I found the photo when I was looking for another photo to post on 'Wintery Fun' and just had to post it......You might be interested to know they are your 10th, 11th and 12th cousins twice removed through John Tenny and I hope to look more into the Dodge family connection in the future.
Thank you, John, for posting this. It looks like a picture transferred to a curved object like a plate. The resolution looks very good, and the details look very precise. Quite unusual. Can you tell me in what year this was produced?

Marion......You have asked an interesting question......In 2014 our younger grand daughter chose to donate her very long hair to cancer research and then dressed up for this photo which was cut for an oval frame, of which I removed, for my wife to copy with her new phone......and yes the photo was curved when it was copied and I also thought it looked like a plate......amazing how things turn out when done on the spur of the moment..laugh

Just outstanding John! Especially, color...and all four chose outfits that compliments the others.  Thanks for sharing!
Scott, now that you mention, color, I remember purple being the favorite of the younger grand daughter.

My grandmother Gisela Schacht as young girl, maybe in Bad Segeberg, Schleswig-Holstein.

by Martin Schacht G2G4 (5.0k points)
A school girl for sure...all dressed up for school and that is the way it should be.  School uniforms...ha! that will never come back in public schools.  Thanks Martin!
She went to school in that dress, but don´t know enough about it. The photo had to be taken in the early 40s in Germany

This is a picture of the Class of 1910 of Union City High School in Union City, Pennsylvania.

My grandfather is at the bottom left and my grandmother is the 5th girl from the right, with her head tilted. She always tilts her head to the side in the pictures from that time period. And my grandfather never smiles, which is strange because he was a big jokester, hail-fellow-well-met kind of guy, big personality, and he had the most genuine smile I can imagine!

by s Davenport G2G6 Mach 6 (66.1k points)
Great grad pic of your grandparents class Davenport!  A cool keepsake for sure.  Wish I had one of mine!  Thanks for sharing this outstanding 'dress up' photo!
