Goodes on WikiTree - Annual Report

Question

This report is part of a series from my project of tracking surnames from my immediate ancestors and those of my wife. In this report, I'm looking at people with the surname Goodes.

As of today, there are 137 profiles for people with a Last Name At Birth of Goodes listed on WikiTree. Of those, 2 had the {{Unsourced}} template applied, leaving 135 profiles (98.5%) at least supposedly sourced.

Also, 36 profiles were not connected to the main tree, leaving 503 profiles (93.3%) connected.

Out of all the deceased, non-fictional, people with Goodes as their Last Name At Birth listed on Wikipedia, none (0.0%) had profiles on WikiTree at the beginning of the month! But to be fair, the one deceased notable Goodes listed on Wikipedia doesn't have many details on his entry, so sourcing him and connecting him is likely to be a challenge:

As it happens, there are no people with the surname Goodes listed on ThePeerage.com. That makes tracking Goodes slightly easier.

I'm always interested in lesser known politicians and I wouldn't mind helping out connect him when I have more time. Also, I note quite a few people on WikiTree with the same name (Creasey) and birth county (Lincolnshire) as his maternal grandfather on WikiTree already.

It belatedly occurred to me that people interested in working on people with the surname Goodes might possibly be interested in working on the Goodes brick wall in my family. The farthest back that we have been able to take that line is John Goodes, who was born in Huntingdonshire, England about 1808.

Various events conspired to keep me from doing a start-of-the-month report for Goodes this year (or even the end-of-the-month report at the beginning of September), but as oftoday, there were 159 WikiTree profiles for people with Goodes as their Last Name At Birth. That's an increase of one profile since the beginning of September.

Wikipedia lists eight people with a surname of Goodes. Of those, there are six living people, leaving a net of two deceased notable Goodeses. Both of them (100%) have profiles on WikiTree.

The percentage of Goodes profiles that are connected to the main tree from Wikipedia, from our family tree, and on WikiTree as a whole remained steady at 0%, 100%, and 92.5%, respectively, so I'm skipping the chart for this month.

The number of connected Goodes profiles has increased by one since the beginning of September, while the number of unlinked profiles and linked but unconnected profiles has remained steady. The difference is too small to see in the chart, so I'm dropping the chart this time around.

Of the 159 Goodes profiles on WikiTree, one is currently marked as unsourced, leaving 158 profiles (99.4%) at least supposedly sourced. That is up slightly compared to the beginning of September. The percentage of Goodes profiles with at least one primary source from Wikipedia and from our family tree remained steady at 100% each. The difference is too small to see in the chart, so I'm skipping it for this month.

The average sourcing level for Goodes profiles from Wikipedia increased from 2.0 to 2.5 since last August. The average sourcing level for Goodes profiles from our family tree remains at 2.6.

The number of "tallied" profiles (profiles from Wikipedia and our watchlists) with one primary source (level 1) has gone down by one since the beginning of August 2022. The number of profiles with two primary sources (level 2) has gone up by one.

The percentage of Goodes profiles on WikiTree as a whole which are unsourced barely shows as a thin orange line. (As the {{Unsourced}} template gets applied to more Goodes profiles where it's needed, this line should get more visible, and as the appropriate "Needs More Records" category gets applies to more Goodes profiles where it's needed, the light orange line should get thicker as well. That might seem like going backwards, but it would actually be progress, because the numbers would more accurately reflect the state of Goodes profiles.)

The percentage of Goodes profiles from Wikipedia with links back to that person's entry are at 100%, and have been since last year, so I won't bother putting up a chart because straight lines are boring.

The percentage of profiles from Wikipedia with images on remains at 0%. The number of profiles from our family tree with images remains at 2.9%. So, to spare you all the shock and stress of yet more straight lines, no chart.

As of July 1, there were 143 WikiTree profiles for people with Goodes as their Last Name At Birth. That's an increase of three profiles since the beginning of January.

There are eight Wikipedia entries for Goodes. Of those, there are six living peoole, leaving a net of 2 Goodeses. Neither of those had WikiTree profiles as of July 1.

The percentage of all Goodes profiles that are connected to the main tree has risen from 90.5% to 93% since last August. The percentage of connected Goodes profiles our family tree remained at 100%.

The average sourcing level for Goodes profiles from our family tree has been steady at 2.0 since August, 2021, so I'm not bothering to put up a chart, since straight lines are boring.

The overall percentage of Goodes profiles that are connected to the main tree dropped slightly from 93% to 92.5% last month. (That was probably due to me adding two new profiles for Goodes notables that haven't been connected yet.) The percentage of Goodes profiles from Wikipedia that are connected to the main tree is currently at zero. Goodes profiles from our family tree remained at 100%.

I'm adding a new measure this year, showing the percentage of profiles which are connected to the main tree, not connected to the main tree but linked to at least one other profile, and not linked to any other profile. (This measure is made possible by Aleš's cool reports.) Hopefully, over time, you should see the percentage of unlinked and unconnected profiles going down, and the percentage of connected profiles going up.

Of the 146 Goodes profiles on WikiTree, two are currently marked as unsourced, leaving 144 profiles (98.6%) at least supposedly sourced. That is down slightly compared to the beginning of July. Over the course of July, the percentage of Woods profiles with at least one primary source from Wikipedia went from null to 100%, and that for those from our family tree increased from 84.4% to 100%.

The average sourcing level for Goodes profiles from our family tree increased from 2.0 to 2.6 during July. The average sourcing level for Goodes profiles from Wikipedia debuts at 2.0.

I have added another new measure for sourcing levels, showing the percentage of "tallied" profiles (profiles from Wikipedia and our watchlists) at each sourcing level. Hopefully, over time, you should see the percentage of profiles at level 0 (unsourced) and level 0.5 (no primary sources) go down, and the number of profiles at level 3 (three or more primary sources) go up.

And still another new measure. This one shows the percentage of "tallied" profiles and WikiTree as a whole which are unsourced, partially sourced (at least a secondary source), and "fully" sourced* (at least three primary sources). This chart shows the difficulty in measuring sourcing levels for WikiTree as a whole, or even a single Last Name At Birth on WikiTree: for the tallied profiles, I depend on the counts in my spreadsheet, where I assign sourcing levels as I check the profiles. For WikiTree as a whole, I depend on WikiTree to get a count of profiles with the {{Unsourced}} template, and WikiTree+ (thank you, Aleš!) to get a count of profiles with either [[Category:More_Records_Needed]] or [[Category:Profiles_with_Incomplete_Sourcing]]. (I imagine that the Categorization Project will merge those two category hierarchies eventually.) But because both templates and categories are applied manually, there are a ton of profiles to which they should be applied, but haven't been yet. So that's why the tallied profiles show as less than 30% "fully sourced", while all profiles show as about than 95% "fully sourced". (This is one big reason why I keep saying that such-and-such a percentage of profiles on WikiTree is "supposedly" sourced.)

 * Yes, I know that three primary sources doesn't actually qualify as fully sourced, because ideally every fact stated in a biography should be backed up by at least one primary source, but I based my sourcing levels on the work of Paul Gierszewski, who first came up with a system for measuring how well profiles are sourced.

And two final new measures:

First, I've been measuring the number of profiles of people listed on ThePeerage.com and Wikipedia which contain links to those people's entries on the respective site, but I hadn't been tracking how those numbers changed over time up to now. During the July, the percentage of profiles for notable Woodses that link back to their Wikipedia entries debuted at 100. (I will spare you the chart with a single dot.)

Second, I'm also starting to track how many profiles have images on them. That is, photos, paintings, drawings, etc. portraying the person whose profile it is. So, even though I think it's better to have things like pictures of gravestones, the old family home, etc. than no image at all, I'm not counting those in this measure. The percentage of profiles from Wikipedia with images on debuts at 0%. The number of profiles from our family tree with images dropped slightly from 3.1% to 2.9% due to me adding a new profile to the tally.
