The photo was taken in 1931 in Friedrichsbrunn in the Harz Mountains. It shows my maternal grandmother Herta Martha Auguste Grabow, later married Beumer (1913-1984) and her second sister, Gisela Gertrud Ilse Grabow, later married Braungardt (*1921).
The Grabow family lived in Friedrichsbrunn in the Harz Mountains at the time because their father, Edmund Christian Grabow (1894-1970), had married a second time after the death of his first wife, Margarete, née Römer (1892-1921), who had died giving birth to Gisela, and this second wife, Ella, née Ehrhardt (1893-1980) was from that village.

OK, for the theme  "Second", I selected a second in time.  This photo of me taken by my father John Miller in 1955 shows the second before the ice cream on my cone hit the pavement.  I call the picture Losing my Ice Cream and it has long been a favorite of the black and white photos he took of me at an early age.

by Pat Miller G2G6 Pilot (223k points)

Oh my Pat!  I think I just lived the moment! crying

Thanks, John.  You got it right.  Dad didn't take a second photo of me crying over spilled ice cream.
Thank you Pat for sharing this with photo of you, with your teddy bear you look adorable
Pat, thank you for sharing such a perfect photo for second. You probably did cry over the ice cream. What a precious photo!
Thank you, Susan.  It looks like my favorite Panda Bear.  Priorities.  Obviously the Panda was more important than the ice cream. But I wonder if a bit of melted ice cream was on the cone making it slippery and hard for a little hand to hold.
Thank you, Alexis. Yes, I cried but I wasn't very good at continual crying.  Both my parents told me that.  I would become easily distracted by something else and the tears stopped dead.
I love this photo, Pat, so I'm glad you decided to share it. Thank you.
Thank you, Lloyd.  I've enjoyed so many of your photos. I'm happy that this one I shared pleased you.

This is a 1922 photo of my uncle Scott Wilber Marvin Jr. He was the second baby born to my maternal grandparents. My grandmother had a difficult birth, as he had weighed 10 lbs., and the doctor gave her something to keep her resting comfortably. My grandfather saw the chance to sign the birth certificate, and he was able to make his son the second Scott Wilber Marvin. My uncle loved this story, since he loved having the same name as his father.

by Alexis Nelson G2G6 Pilot (853k points)
I can just imagine, Alexis, Scott Jr., with that look, thinking about his father......I'm going to walk in his shoes.
Oh, Alexis, what an adorable baby! That expression just melts my heart.
Your uncle Scott look adorable Alexis thank you sweet Alexis for sharing this
John, that is exactly what he did; he was a oilfield driller exactly like his father, and he even looked like his father.
Thank you Pat—to me, he looks like a boy baby, even in that gown.
Thank you Susan, he and my mother were very close siblings.

This photo of my mother's parents, Charles Ishmul Williams Sr and Lillian Pearl Denton Williams , Lillian was his second wife, and my mother, was Charles second child which I did not know that my grandfather had been married before and had a child before my mother til a few years before my mother passed away , the photo was taken in either Quebeck, White county, Tennessee, or Lebanon, Wilson county, Tennessee, probably taken between 1935 and sometime in the 1940's but not sure

by Janine Isleman G2G6 Pilot (103k points)
Janine.....it seems that, in their time, our parents didn't tell us absolutely everything.....my father did at one time tell me that he had been bringing up a lady's daughter, that I finally confirmed as a stepsister, when I inherited the marriage records of her mother.
That is true especially with my grandfather's family , his mother, had a mystery as well , having to do with my grandfather's birth, as his father is a mystery as well
Janine thank you for sharing this wonderful photo of your mother parents

A wonderful photo

This is the second time I have shown this picture. When I was in second grade, I was invited to Betsy's birthday party.

by Joyce Vander Bogart G2G6 Pilot (199k points)
Ummm......I don't believe I see any boys in the photo......were they hiding?
Sorry, John, only little girls at this party. It is all the girls in our class at Balance Rock School, (grades 1-4 were all in same room). Even though it was early April, you will note that the girl on left, middle row, is wearing snow pants.
This is great, Joyce.  All these happy faces.  And yes, I don't remember a single birthday party with boys during my childhood.

This is a photo of my grandmother, Myrna Wintersgill (1937–2019) and my step-grandfather, Edward Trautvetter (1923–2009) at my dad's wedding in 1996. The marriage of my grandmother and my step-grandfather was both of their second marriages, having both been widowed following the deaths of the spouses in their first marriages. They each had three children from their previous marriages and had one child together.

Sometimes we hesitate to do something again for fear it won't be as special the second time. We went to Alaska in 2007 and worked at a campground just north of the entrance to Denali National Park. It was a wonderful trip. We went with friends and always had someone to share with. Visited everything we could and thoroughly enjoyed it. Even got to take a flight-seeing trip to see Denali mountaintop.

We went a second time in 2009 - just the two of us. And worked at the same campground. Different staff, same wonderful atmosphere. Lots of different adventures. Definitely did not disappoint at all! The second time we took a flightseeing trip and the plane actually landed on the Denali glacier. Yes that is my husband wearing shorts!

Don't be afraid to go back again - the second time can be just as good or even better than the first!

With the theme "Second," it wasn't difficult to decide on a photo to share. This is my older sister Clara on her fifth birthday, in front of the family home in Albany, Oregon. (I couldn't come up with a photo of her on her second birthday, so this will have to do.)

She was the second child and second daughter in the family. She was born on the second day of the second month. (So this photo was taken 2 Feb 1942.) Her theme of being second didn't hold up, though. Sad to say, she was the first of my siblings to pass away (and the only one, so far).

Thank you Lloyd for sharing such an adorable photo of your sister Clara.
Thank you for your sweet comment, Alexis.

This is Hannah Olida Ostrom Black, the second wife of Nicholas Black.

by Mark Weinheimer G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
With her son and daughter, and grandson.
I think it is a lovely photo, showing the different generations.
I realized there is someone next to Hannah who didn't get into the picture. (You can edit the picture to be smaller so that he shows up.) When I looked at the larger image, I saw that he and Hannah are holding hands. I also noticed that mother and daughter have the same skirt. I imagine them together in the general store, choosing the fabric. Thanks for an interesting picture.
That would be Grandpa Black, Nicholas born Schwarz, Black in America, My grandfather and my dad spent most of their summers, as boys, on the family farm. It was a beloved place for both of them.  My grandparents built a house, on the farm, and retired there.  It was the site of many family reunions, over the years.  It was sold out of the family after the death of my aunt.

This is my Grand Aunt, Alice Larner, taken in a studio in Cromer, Norfolk England in 1908.  She was the second child of William Helsdon Larner and Kate Eliza Brown. My Grandfather William, was her only sibling.  Alice never married, after her parents died she worked as a housekeeper.

by Christine Frost G2G6 Pilot (153k points)
I think she is wearing really cool clothes!
That is interesting as my Mum told me that Alice's mother (her grandmother) used to send for clothes on approval for the two of them from a shop across the county. The idea was that they would chose what they wanted and send the others back, but they nearly always they kept all of them! She must have got that from her Dad as she was only 2 when her Grandma died.

If I had had a slender figure like Alice, I would have wanted the same outfit! smiley I have been to Cromer, but it was in the 1980s.

The second city where my grandfather Kalle lived, was Luleå in Norrbotten, Sweden. He was born in 1912, 130 kilometres north, in Haparanda on the border to Finland. Around 1915 his family moved to the bigger city Luleå.

The photo is from the "living room", and was taken by Kalle in 1931. My grandad had bought his first package of colour film plates, and this was one of the four colour photos he took. The experiment with colour photograpy was temporary, I think it was probably expensive and also much more difficult to develop.

I enjoyed looking at this interesting picture close up. You can see the pattern on the wallpaper, the flowers on the chair fabric, the angel-wing begonia by the window. Two puzzles: why are there so many chairs? You could hardly walk through this living room. And puzzle two: what is the red thing in the corner?  Is it a strange-looking plant? Or a strange-looking lampshade? There are always more questions. Thanks for an interesting picture.
Thanks for your comment Joyce! It made me take a second look. It must be a lamp shade, there is a cable going to it. And you are right, there is like a forest of chairs!

This photo is of my second cousin twice removed Leonard Joseph Ross and his wife Doris Ingleby on their wedding day. He was a steel metal filer or maybe filler.

What makes this more interesting is that they named their oldest child Anthony Leonard Ross, 1936-2006, my dad who would have been second cousin to Anthony Leonard Ross, 1936 was also a first born and also named Anthony Leonard Ross he was born 1927 and died 2015.

That makes Anthony Leonard Ross, 1936, the second person of that name in the family.

What an interesting exercise! What an interesting exercise! In going back 6 generations of both male and female ancestors I discovered that only my Mum and myself are second born. The majority were anything from 5th child to 10th child. In todays nuclear family of 2 or 3 children we wouldn't exist!

This is a picture of Mum on joining the Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force during world War 11

In this photo is my dear mother-in-law, my second mother, Alma Kerrigan Church (now 96). With her is her second sister Martha "Marty" Kerrigan Samse (now 93).  I chose this photo, which I have used before, because these two girls -- women, both died within the last 10 days and I wanted to honor them.

Alma, Mother as I called her, has always treated me as a daughter and to me she was my second mother. Marty was also very special. I will miss them both very much.

Oh, Robin, I am so sad to hear that. It is lovely that you post their photo again. It is a wonderful picture.
Thank you, Maria. They were two very special women and always very close to each other.
Robin, I recognized the photo (a big splash next?).....it is great that you honor them.....I send my condolences.
Thank you, John for your condolences. They both lived good long lives.
Wonderful photo Robin I can se they really have fun

Thank you for sharing this wonderful photo
Thank you, sweet Susan.
Robin, the mark of a wonderful photo is you remember it.  As soon as I saw this image I remembered it.  Thank you for sharing it again.  That you had such warm relationships with your husband's family, that they truly became your family, is excellent.  You know you are blessed.  Many people have poor relationships with the spouse's family.  These ladies were very special indeed.
Thank you, Pat, for your comments and your insightfulness. I remember having a discussion with my mother-in-law when I first married my husband about what I was going to call her. She mentioned a number of names, one of which was Mother. I asked her if that was okay and she said that she would be honored to have me call her that. And from that day our bond was formed and she became my mother.

31 Aug 1950.....my father brought, his father Henry (84) and his mother Florence (82), home to the Okanagan, B.C., for the second time, after being away in Europe and various places around the world for some 35 years.  Henry is pictured in Monte Carlo, as his memory is fading, and Florence is shown being greeted by me, age 4 1/2 years, in Kelowna, B.C., after having stopped off, in New York, to visit with my father's brother's family.  I remember picking a cat up, off the lawn, and taking it to my 'Grannie', only to be cautioned that she was afraid of cats.....it was only yesterday, that it occurred to me, she might have been fearful of Tigers during her early life in India and Burma.

I love those old photos what a treat to have

What a sweet story your father brought his parents to Okanagan

Thank you for sharing this wonderful photo and story John
Thankyou, Susan......in my school years, I would accompany my father and his mother to our favorite seafood restaurant, when we relocated to Victoria, B.C., and I would listen to them reminisce about 'the old times'.
