This is a photo taken about 1923 of my father Clare Alexander  "Chick" Lovelace. He would have been 4 or 5 in this photo, and I feel like he had a happy childhood.

by Alexis Nelson G2G6 Pilot (853k points)
What a cutie, Alexis, and I love the outfit.  Looks like velvet.
Pat, thank you for your comment. Yes, it must have been velvet, and from what I have read the haircut was part of the style at that time.
Your dad Alexis was a beautiful child thank you for sharing this wonderful photo
So cute. Love the outfit and the haircut.
Thank you Susan. His mother was such a fun and sweet grandmother, and she would tell me wonderful stories about his childhood.

Mark, thank you for the comment—it might take awhile for that haircut to come back in style for boys. smiley

Alexis, your father, Clare, has a special place in our hearts.

John, thank you for your very dear comment. You know that you and Katy have a special place in my heart.heart

Candy and Party Hats 1956.  This was a big part of childhood.  THE BIRTHDAY PARTY.  If you had six friends, that's seven parties a year.  Some parties featured the entire class of students.  Pin the tail on the donkey.  Musical Chairs. Paper hats.  Party dresses. The cake.  The candles. The candy.  The gifts...were usually what your parents decided you should give.  My friend Janice received three dusting powder mitts.  She whispered to me, what do you dust with the mitt?

Another of my father's photos.

Pat, thank you for sharing such a happy childhood photo—all four of you are adorable.
Thanks, Alexis.  It was my first birthday party.
My mother had a dusting powder mitt. I thought they were for grownups.
Gorgeous birthday photo Pat with you and your friends thank you for sharing this wonderful photo
As I said, Joyce, parents often picked the gifts you gave.  Mummie, let's buy her Bazooka Bubble Gum and a water pistol.  No, she's a girl.  We'll buy the lavender scented dusting powder mitt.  It was in the soaps section so Mums would think--hygiene.
Thank you, Susan.

Eleanor and Nelson Halloway, Cornwall Connecticut, about 1924. The Halloway family were good friends of my grandparents,

by Joyce Vander Bogart G2G6 Pilot (199k points)
I love the picture, Joyce. It's especially  fun for me as I don't remember wagons in my childhood.  I lived in a city, then a suburb.  Even though we had door-to-door deliveries of milk and bread, they had little trucks, proudly displaying company logo. So no little wagons, no big wagons and yet I descend from Millers who MADE wagons.
Yes. Love the sepia tones and the expressions. Timeless.

A photo of my mom and her two brothers taken around 1940 I would estimate. She is the only one still alive today and kicking at age 90.

by Mark Williams G2G6 Pilot (416k points)
Mark, thank you for sharing such a great photo of your mother and her brothers. They all three look about the same age; they must have had great fun together. Your mother is precious with her perfect hair and cute blouse and vest. I am so glad she is doing so well at age 90. I hope you will write more about her—just tell her that there is a women in Oklahoma that wants to know more about her.
You're most welcome. She was the one who started the family history research in the late 1970s when it was old school, pre-internet. Stuck at it for 30 some years.
Very nice picture, Mark. Family research is so much easier with the internet.  I started researching in 1980.  Endless letter writing, microfilm reading, but I'm so glad your mom passed on her love of family history to you.

Frances Harvey, at home in London, England, in 1921.
She was a relative of my grandmother's through her step mother.

Christine, thank you for sharing such an adorable photo of Frances with her treasures. Everything about the photo is so dear—her bow in her ringlet hair show that she is dressed her best to be pictured with her favorite things.

My father "Willie" William Henry Thompson (1899-1983), wearing the sailor suit, at Cheltenham, England, at age 5 years 7 months.   By 1911 , his family had relocated to Okanagan Center, British Columbia, Canada and built a house on the bench of land above the rock outcropping in the the righthand photo.   There, playing and swimming with his best friend, Frank Gray, my father tells me, "He had the best time of his childhood".   On 14 Aug 1952, after meeting my father's parents, in their 80's, whom he had relocated from the Mediterranean to Kelowna, B.C., we drove 22 miles north, so my father could introduce me to 'the old homestead'.   On the beach I found a 'crystal rock' and there I am "Jackie" John Alexander Thompson, age 6 years 7 months in a photo that was on his mantel, forever, as his favorite......I dedicate this to his memory......may we never grow up........

Great photos, John. And I love your tribute to your father.
Lovely story and photos, John ("Jackie").  And you are so right.  We must keep the happy child inside us alive as adults. To laugh, to play, to explore, to learn.
Thankyou Mark, when the photo came back from developing, we both agreed that the rock outcropping had the appearance of a lion head, something my father remarked that he had not noticed in his boyhood.
Pat, as I look back, with fond memories, I realize that as my father brought life events to me he was reliving his life.....it makes me happy.
John gorgeous photo of your dad and story thank you for sharing
Thankyou Susan.....I have endeavored to pass his influence on to future generations.

This is me!

In the summer of 1962, on the swing in our back yard/garden. I used to spend hours on this swing. My mum always put bows in my rather unruly hair. My shoes are school shoes, probably the only shoes I owned . Though sometimes I got hand me downs from my older girl cousins.

In the background is the pram, my then youngest sister( child #5)  who was born in May 1962 was probably sleeping in the pram. Behind the pram is a building that was referred to as 'the garage', but there was never a car in it, I think it was originally a barn from the time when the property was part of the farm that was behind our garden. It was dark, and full of cobwebs and had a crumbling concrete floor. I think my dad used it as a workshop, before he built The Shed! It was about 16 x 16 feet, it was built as a place to store the push lawnmower, the older three kids I was child #2 used to keep buckets of frog spawn in it, and inevitably after the tadpoles had turned into tiny frogs someone would knock one of the buckets over and there would be tiny frogs everywhere.

On the left you can see the family home, it was originally a bungalow, but when the family got too big, an upstairs was added. Hanging on the washing line are about a dozen white terry cloth nappies (diapers) and what looks like a ladder, which was probably there so my mum could reach the washing line.
