Who was the wife William Noyes?

William Noyes is only linked to his 2nd wife Anne Stevens Noyes who only gave birth to his daughter Anne.  His first wife, Anne Parker Noyes is the one who gave birth to his first seven children.  The link to Anne Stevens as their mother needs to be corrected and Anne Parker added.

It looks like Anne Parker doesn't even have a profile.  I'll check again and if she doesn't I'll go ahead and create one for her.

edit - Looking at his Wikipedia entry, this seems a little more complicated.

I've added the Magna Carta tag as this discussion has gateway implications.

Anticipating David D's attention, David, should Dorothy's https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Stephens-2517 profile be examined for gateway status?

Per joes analysis below, she was not likely a daughter of Nicholas Stevens and therefore not a gateway ancestor.

Oops.  Technically Dorothy is not a gateway since she didn't migrate to the colonies.  That said, her tie to Nicholas Stevens is still in doubt.

It is my intention to put this on her profile, disconnect her false parents, and then she needs to have her name changed back Anne Parker.

:There is some dispute about the name of the wife of William Noyes.  She is sometimes said to be Anne Parker, sister of [[Parker-9835|Rev. Robert Parker]].  She is also sometimes said to be Anne Stevens, sister of Rev. Richard Stevens and a daughter of [[Stephens-493|Nicholas Stevens]].  He is sometimes said to have married both Anne Parker and Anne Stevens.  So which Anne (or both) is correct?

:First, there is no direct evidence that William Noyes had more than one wife.  That he married both Anne Stevens and Anne Parker is primarily an attempt to explain away conflicting secondary sources.  The evidence for Anne Stevens is essentially the same evidence used for Anne Parker so there is no reason to think he married both of them.  It is interesting that Anne Noyes named only the youngest children in her will, and that William's eldest son Ephraim left bequests only to his brothers John and the children of brother Richard.<ref>Wheeler, Richard Anson.  ''History of the Town of Stonington, County of New London, Connecticut'', (New London, Conn., 1900): [http://tinyurl.com/yb36btgv page 718].</ref>  This does open the possibility that William had a first wife who was the mother of the eldest children, and that Anne was the mother of only the younger ones.

:The evidence that the wife of William Noyes was Anne Parker is very straight forward.  Her grandson Nicholas Noyes when asked to give an account of his family for Cotton Mather's ''Magnali Christi Americana'' directly said the mother James Noyes was "sister to the learned Mr. Robert Parker."<ref>Mather, Cotton. ''Magnalia Christi Americana: or, The Ecclesiastical History of New-England, from its First Planting in the Year 1620. unto the year of Our Lord, 1698''. (London, 1702): [http://tinyurl.com/yae9g9sl book III, page 145].</ref>  From his account of the Noyes and Parker families it is clear he was extremely well acquainted history of the Noyes and Parker families and there is no reason to think he got the name of his own grandmother wrong.  The suggestion on wikipedia that sister could mean sister-in-law is not a reasonable interpretation given the wording and context of this record.<ref>[https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Noyes Wikipedia: William Noyes].</ref>

:The second claim is that Anne was the sister of Rev. Richard Stevens of Stanton St Bernard, the sister of Parker's wife Dorothy Stevens, and the daughter of Nicholas Stephens (d. 1611) and his wife Frances Brydges.<ref>Currier, John James.  ''Ould Newbury: Historical and Biographical Sketches,'' (Boston, 1896): [http://tinyurl.com/ybveg9su page 165].</ref>

:To quickly dispense with the second part of the claim, Anne, Dorothy and Richard Stevens are not the children of Nicholas Stephens.  None of them are named in the will of Nicholas Stephens.<ref name="Goddard">Goddard, E.H. ed. "The Society's MSS: Chisledon and Draycot," in ''Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Magazine'', vol. XXX no. XC (December 1898): [http://tinyurl.com/y8rkg3na page 140].</ref>  Furthermore, we know Nicholas Stevens' son and heir was born c1587 (age 24 in 1611) while Rev. Richard Stevens was born c1582 (matriculated at Oxford aged 15 in 1597).  There is nothing connect Anne (?) Noyes, Dorothy (Stevens) Parker, or Richard Stevens to Nicholas Stevens of Burdrop.

:That her LNAB was Stevens depends on the idea that when Nicholas Noyes said his grandmother was the sister of Rev. Robert Parker he meant that she was a sister of his wife Dorothy Stevens and therefore a sister-in-law.  However, though "sister" was not uncommonly used for "sister-in-law" in this time period, the context and wording of Nicholas Noyes' statement do not support this conclusion.  Sister for sister-in-law was used for more personal relationships, not when discussing the relationship of an ancestor from 80 years previous.  Given that there there is no other evidence to think she was a Stevens, and given that her suggested parentage is demonstrably false (probably an attempt to give royal ancestry to Anne), there is no reason not to accept at face value the statement of Nicholas Noyes that she was Anne Parker, sister of Rev. Robert Parker.

Very nicely presented, Joe.
Well reasoned.
Here's another website regarding Noyes http://www.noyesgenealogy.net/index.php
Re the 3d to last paragraph of Joe's post - What evidence is there that the wife of Rev. Robert Parker (Parker-9835) was named Dorothy Stevens/Stephens or that she was the sister of Rev. Richard Stevens/Stephens?
I believe the last two paragraphs argue that she is not Anne Stevens.  Her name needs to be changed to Anne Parker.
Agreed. But as a secondary matter, is there any evidence that Rev. Robert Parker's wife was named Dorothy Stevens/Stephens or that she was the sister of Rev. Robert Stevens/Stephens?
I see.  I don't think there is any actual evidence that the wife of Robert Parker was named Dorothy Stevens.

Bret, sorry for the delay in responding.  Our attention has come to this again recently.

It's not that there was a first and second wife, but lack of agreement about the maiden name of William's one wife Anne.

Her grandson reported that she was sister to a Robert Parker.

Later researchers have suggested this was meant to mean sister-in-law, and that Anne was sister to Robert Parker's wife Dorothy and that both girls were daughters of Nicholas Stevens.

But William Noyes' wikipedia entry points out that the will of Nicholas did not name either of the two girls, and so "The claim therefore lacks positive verification. "

Bottom line: we may not know WHICH maiden name she had (at least yet).

The relevant quotation from Cotton Mather's "Magnalia Christiana Americana", Book III, Appendix, is "James Noyes [elder brother of Nicholas Noyes] was born, 1608.... His mother was sister to the learned Mr. Robert Parker." That does read differently to modern eyes than to those of Mather's time.
And sometimes sister means sister.  There is no other reason to think she is a Stevens and it is easy to show her supposed parentage is wrong.
