Biography

Catherine (Cayley) Legard was born in Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire, England.

Catherine was the daughter of George Cayley and Sarah Walker.[1][2]

On 19 May 1831 Catherine married Henry Ralph Beaumont of West Bretton, Yorkshire, at Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire.[3][4]

Henry Ralph Beaumont died in 1838[5] and was buried at Brompton by Sawdon on 3 July that year.[6]

The 1841 census lists Catherine at Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire, with her birth county as Yorkshire and her age as 29. Also in the household with the last name Beaumont: Emily, 9; Henry, 8; Mary C, 7; Thomas R, 4.[7][8]

On 6 May 1845 Catherine married James Anlaby Legard.[9] The marriage was registered in the Marylebone district of London in the 2nd quarter of 1945.[10]

The 1851 census lists Catherine at Lenton Hall, Nottinghamshire, age 39, born Brompton, Yorkshire. Husband: James A Legard, 46, born Ganton, Yorkshire, Commander (half-pay) Royal Navy. Children: James Digby Legard, 4, born Lenton; Allayne B, 3, born Lenton; Henry F Beaumont, 18, born Scarborough, Yorkshire; Mary C Beaumont, 16, born Newby Park, Yorkshire; Richard T Beaumont, 13, born Newby Park.[11][12]

The 1861 census lists Catherine at Marylebone, London, age 49, "separated", born Bromton, Yorkshire.[13][14]

The 1871 census lists Catherine in Westminster, Middlesex, age 59, born Scarborough, Yorkshire.[15]

The 1881 census lists Catherine at Kensington, London, age 69, widow, born Brompton by Sawdon, Yorkshire.[16][17]

Catherine's death was registered in the Kensington district of London in the 1st quarter of 1887.[18] Probate was granted on her estate on 29 June 1887, with her death date given as 11 March 1887.[19] (ThePeerage.com, citing Burke's Peerage, gives the death date as 12 March.[20])
