Apparently when Dugdale was Visitating Yorkshire in 1665-66 he was presented by a Plumpton with a family pedigree, in Latin, which he politely copied, untranslated. Well it looks a lot less bogus than most of its ilk.
It's in Clay's Dugdale with Additions, page 389. Italic text is Dugdale's; rest is Clay's.
Supposing we accept it, what we're told is that Nigel, (L. Nigellus) de Plumpton married Hawise (L. Avicia) de Clare, parents not named.
There's an IPM which may confirm the name. I haven't come across any other source for her name, or any source for her parents.
But evidently when Clay was doing his Additions, he didn't think Hawise was the daughter of a man with 3 earldoms.
The most popular internet version makes Hawise the same person as Amice, the dowager Countess of Devon.
It all seems a bit unlikely, as the Plumptons were fairly minor gentry. It seems even more unlikely that a family pedigree would fail to mention it.
Also, Wikipedia gives Amice a different second husband.
In Ancestralia this little stunt is often found in connection with another stunt, where a descendant Agnes de Plumpton, who marries Richard de Aldbrough around 1460, is made to have a daughter Agnes, born 1430, who marries a Thornton, ancestor of a Colonial immigrant.
Anyway, I've made a new profile for Amice. But some of the data in this profile is Amice's. No idea where that 1287-01-12 death date comes from.
