Hans Gaar was born in 1545 on the farm "Kolnpach" (which was really Kolmbach), about fifteen miles from the Austrian border in Kolmbach, Oberpfalz, Bavaria, Germany. Hans Gaar/Gahr's vocation was farming. He married Elizabeth Schaidtl on 23 Jan 1569/70 in Regensburg, Oberpfalz, Bavaria, Germany. There were two children, Thomas and Barbara, who seemed to be totally orphaned when Hans died.[1] He died only seven years after he married, on 2 Sep 1577.[2]Shelton-1487 19:41, 31 December 2014 (EST)

I'm interested to hear from any Gaar/Gar/Garr descendants who have taken the (paternal) Y-DNA test or a regular DNA test. My father's mother was a Garr, descended from Andreas Gaar, his son John Adam Gaar, and grandson Michael Garr (d. 1790 GA), both of whom had ALSO married into immigrant families from the same Germanna group (Wilhoit and Kaffer). Yet, neither my father or I have ANY Germanic DNA, while we do have DNA matches with a number of Gaars from Georgia, Mississippi, and Oklahoma. So, I am curious to know if the Gaars descend from some neighboring culture, and not a Germanic one. Unlike many surnames, there does not appear to be a Y-DNA group for the Gaar/Garr family online. (Y-DNA is valid for many centuries, so a few Garrs submitting that test could provide clues regarding the origin of the Garr family).
