Research Note

Parentage

Neither Scots Peerage or Royal Ancestry show a daughter for James Kennedy and Mary Stewart. A review of the sources found on the Peerage, and a search of the Google Group soc.genealogy.medieval reveal the following:

Two editions of the Sheriffs of Galloway apply considerable circumstantial evidence and wishfull thinking to build a weak case.[1][2] Her first name appears with a question mark in the first account. The charters cited in this account never mention the wife of Andrew Agnew.[3]

This identification was followed by a later family history that took her given name as fact, but supplied no supporting evidence. Also cited was a 17xx newspaper notice regarding shipping, with a long parenthetical note by the author, is placed so that it looks like it was part of the original notice.[4]

Two postings on Google Group soc.genealogy.medieval try to support this identification, but neither provide any additional primary evidence. The first is just looking for ideas for a book, restating the pedigree from the previous books.[5] The second supplies some rationale, but relies almost entirely on the parethetical note given in the Book of the Agnews, not realizing it was not part of the newspaper notice.[6] Neither of these postings received any responses.
