Biography

There is no evidence of Thomas Lummys origin or parentage, or any event other than his burial.

Thomas Lummyus was buried 28 October 1551 at Thaxted,[1] probably in the St. John the Baptist Churchyard at Thaxted, and possibly in the "Loomis Vaults".[citation needed]

He was hypothesized to be the father of John Lummys of Thaxted, Essex who made his will in 1567 (see Research Notes).

Thomas did not leave a will or inventory that is now of record.

Resarch Notes

Charles A. Hoppin Jr. wrote the 60 or so page chapter "The Loomis Family in the Old World" in Descendants of Joseph Loomis in America And His Antecedents in the Old World.[2] This chapter is what is typically referenced when any of Joseph Loomis' English ancestry is discussed.

This section makes assumptions due to insufficient evidence, and should not be regarded an infallible treatment of this family.

Hoppins argued that Thomas was the father of John Lummys of Thaxted, purported father of John Lomas, of Braintree, based on an argument of elimination. He inferred relationships from a number of wills, though his conclusions are not conclusive. It largely assumed that the Lavenham, Suffolk Lommys/Lommances were children of the William Lommance who was buried in 1540 at Thaxthed, Essex, and that John Lummys of Braintree (d. 1619) and Edward Lomys of Bocking (m. 1593) were the unnamed children in the 1567 will of John Lummys of Thaxted. He assumed that John Lummys of Braintree was the son of Thomas Lummyus based on the lack of contradictory evidence.[3]

Even if Thomas was not the father of John, they were in all likelihood closely related.
