It is believed that William and two of his brothers, John and Richard came to Chesterfield, Virginia in 1727. One source states England as their heritage and another states Scotland. 1727 is the year King George came to the throne in England and both sources state the brothers each received large tracks of land grants from King George.
The fact the brothers may have Scottish heritage does not rule out the belief that they were of French decent, for there was much friendship between Scotland and France during the time they were both enemies of England, the Stuart monarchs of Scotland had intermarried with French Royalty.
There is some confusion if William was born in Virginia or England or if he was born in Scotland/England.
William died around the age of 75.
