Biography

By John J. Schneider: May 15, 1899 Jakob Reiner and wife Barbara and daughter Hermina (then age 13) arrived in Gladstone, ND. They were met by their son, John Reiner, Sr. who had already built a sod house on his homestead, having arrived in 1898. Jakob Reiner homesteaded the NW 1/4 of SW 1/4 and S 1/2 of NW and SW of NE and also built a sod house. They farmed for several years with son John until Jakob lost his sight, then retired to the home of his son. Their first experience with the North Dakota winters was a three day blizzard which completely covered their sod house with a huge snow drift. John, living about 1/2 mile from his parents, walked over to check on them and could not find their house. After calling to them for awhile, he noticed something coming up through the snow. It was the handle of a butter churn which Jakob was using to get out. Luckily their sod house door opened inward. Blizzards were so severe during the years of 1898-1900 that many people used binder twine tied to the house and barn in order to find their way back. In 1918 Jakob had surgery on his eyes and regained vision in one eye, after being blind for many years. He died June 1, 1919 at his son's home in Gladstone. Barbara Boon Reiner died in Gladstone July 13, 1925. Both are buried in St. Elizabeth's Cemetery in Lefor, ND. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=49665430
