Malcolm was born in 1917 in Detroit, Michigan. He was the son of William Reith and Mabel Elizabeth Garner. He died in Oak Park, Illinois in 2001.

He appears in the 1920 census, age 3, living with his parents and siblings in Wayne, Michigan. In 1940, Malcolm is listed as married but still living with his immediate family. His wife is not listed under this household.

Malcolm's marriage to Betty Homsher was a year later and took place in Lucas, Ohio.
