Joseph was born 11 June 1797 at Argyle, Yarmouth[1] to Jacob Spinney and Susan Atwood.
Patterson wrote in 1917 that "from Argyle, Yarmouth County... Jacob Spinney... and Joseph, his brother [settled at Tatamagouche]", and that "Joseph had two sons: Joseph, who lived in the village, where he died in the winter of 1912, and Stillman, who settled on his father's place; and four daughters, one of whom, Joan, is still living in Pugwash."[2]
Joseph married Ann Roberts Goodwin. They had (presumed order; guessed ages from 1827 and 1838 censuses):
Joan, b. abt. 1824 (if over 14 in 1838 and born by 1827)
Joseph, b. August 1827
Susan, b. bet. 1828-1832 (if over 6 in 1838)
Stillman, b. bet. 1828-1832 (if over 6 in 1838)
Sarah, b. aft. 1832
Mary Jane, b. abt. 1837 (aged 34 in 1871)
In 1827, Joseph Spinney was enumerated in Argyle, Yarmouth. He had two males and two females in his household.[3]
He moved to Tatamagouche, Colchester by 4 August 1836, when he purchased 150 acres of land there.[4] Joseph was enumerated as a farmer there in 1838. In addition to himself, he had two females under 6, two males between 6 and 14, one female between 6 and 14, and two females above the age of 14 in his household.[5]
In 1871, Joseph was enumerated at Tatamagouche with his wife Annie, and Emiline and Mary Jane.[6]
