Biography

Walter Hugh McPhee was born about 1865 in Lurgan, County Armagh, Ireland, the son of Henry McPhee and Elizabeth O'Neill. In the 1881 census, Walter, a Railway Servant, was living with his widowed mother Eliza and his siblings Harry, John, James, and Anna at 74 Stevenson St in Barony, Glasgow. Also there was his sister in law and two nephews.

He married Jeannie Cumberford 25 Dec 1885 at Gallowgate, Glasgow. Walter and Jeannie had at least 6 children. In the 1891 census, Walter, a 26 year old Egg Salesman, and Jane are living at 23 Queen Mary St in Barony with their children Lizzie, Henry and Hugh. In the 1901 census, Walter and Jane are at 80 Dalmarnock St in Glasgow with their children Elizabeth, Henry, Hugh, Alice, Jenny and Minnie. In the 1921 census, Hugh W (Walter), a 54 year old Egg Salesman for the Wm Crawford Egg Merchant is with his wife Jean C age 52 at 594 Gallowgate with their children Harry 32, a Motor Driver for Wm Dougall Motor Hires, Alice 30, a Cloth Darner for Rule & Greenlees Cloth Manufacturers, Minnie 25, a Carpet Weaver for Messrs. Lyll Carpet Manufacturers, Walter 19, a Riveter for Henderson & Co. Shippers, and James 16, a House Painter for John Burns Painters and Decorators.

Walter died 27 Dec 1929 at the Royal Cancer Hospital in Glasgow of Carcinoma of the esophagus. His usual residence was 265 Duke St in Glasgow. His son Henry was the death informant. His wife Jeannie died a year later.
