James Bruce Jnr calling William Archer a liar and threatening to take him to court

• • To William Archer

When a person stands in a Police Court, before a bench of magistrates, and put upon his oath, solemnly declares that he has in the same court, and on oath, previously sworn false such a man if he can be so named, is not worth the notice, or to be admitted into the society of any man. Such a person now comes forward, viz., William Archer, who tries through the column of a newspaper to assert his own innocent, upright and humane character, and endeavour to blast the good name of others, as he has stated in the Bathurst Free Press of the 19inst., that he has maintained me, and to use his own words seen all my wants provided for upwards of two years. I deny ever received the smallest assistance from him in any respect, during the time specified, and I would recommend the said William Archer, not to make use of such words in reference to having supported me for the past or future, else I shall be under the necessity of introducing him again to the notice of the magistrates to try if he can swear true or false; and if William Archer imagines that I have stated anything contrary to the truth concerning him, I hope he will call upon me to prove it, and I will state the same over again, if necessary.
