Virginia's father died in 1930; her mother was scheduled for surgery in 1935, and feared that she might die. Just days before her surgery and death, Mirtie Rohrbaugh Hale wrote this letter to her church friends, Burt and Verna Hale, who were not related and were childless. Burt and Verna did adopt Virginia and were her legal parents. However, Virginia spent most summers with her sisters, Lois and Leta, and maintained contact with her biological family throughout her life. She called herself lucky to have had so many loving parents. (Note: the original letter is handwritten, and is in the family's possession.)
