Adjutant General show only one man in Company D, 54, Massachusetts Infantry, named James H. Jackson, and her served as Sergeant, This claimant can not read or write, and could not have served as 1st Sergeant, He is illiterate and very ignorant, I believe that he served in the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, but not in Company D or in B 55 Infantry.

This case should be thoroughly examined to determine the pensioners service, I did not demand his pension certificate, as he informed me that he is to remain in this city and the certificate, can be secured when the case is sent to the field, all of which is respectfully submitted.

The Commissioner of Pensions,

Sir; - I have the honor to submit the testimony herewith, without papers in the case, No. 922,015 of James H. Jackson Company D 54, and B 55 Massachusetts Colored Infantry.

The pensioner called at the State Aid office in this city on the 23 instant, and applied for assistance, not being able to give a good account of his army service, he was advised to get a certificate from the Adjutant General as to service, and while at said office it became apparent that he did not perform the service for which he is pensioned, and the case was reported to me and the claimant's statement is herewith, and it is evident that this pensioner is not pensioned for the service rendered by him, The records of the
