knew one James H. Jackson in this Home.

I came here in 1898 and this Jackson came here shortly after and while here his wife came, from Benton Harbor, Michigan to visit him and not long after he left and went up there and claimed he was going back to Massachusetts as he got there an allowance of eight dollars from the state, no it was six dollars a month he claimed he was allowed. He was a pensioner here.

He spoke of being in both the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Colored Volunteer Infantry but from his conversation I was convinced he was not in the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry (Colored) but in the 54th Massachusetts Colored Volunteer Infantry. The two regiments were brigaded together and made the same campaign together and he could give no account of the

DEPOSITION C

Case of James H. Jackson, No. 922,015

On this 10th day of July, 1906, at National Military Home, county of Grant, State of Indiana, before me, C.E. Paul, a Special Examiner of the Bureau of Pensions, personally appeared Edward S. Bowlin, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during this special examination of aforesaid claim or pension, deposes and says:

I am 68 years of age; address above. I served in Company G 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry from May 1863 to August 20, 1865 as Private. We were colored troops.

I was born and raised in Randolph County, Indiana, but enlisted in Massachusetts.
