In 1942, Wasyl Pysh registered for the WWII military draft at the age of 46. The United States had entered World War II on December 8, 1941, following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The Fourth Registration for the
draft was conducted on April 27, 1942 for men between the ages of 45 and 64; it was often called the "old man's registration." At that time the family lived at 643 Ridge Avenue, Carnegie, Pa. Wasyl Pysh was still working for the Pittsburgh and West Virginia Railroad, in Rook.
