The Slate Hill Plantation house was built by Nathaniel Venable in 1756. HIs daughter, Elizabeth Woodson Venable was born here. The small building on the left is Venables office where the meeting to form Hampden-Sydney College was held in early February 1775. The office was moved to the College campus in 1944 and the house was dismantled and removed in 1971. This photograph was taken circa 1890
