The 1862 U.S. Cavalry guidon marked a shift in military flag design. Before this, cavalry units did not carry Stars & Stripes flags at the regimental level. In January 1862, the War Department standardized company-level guidons to follow the Stars & Stripes design, producing more than 10,000 such flags. These swallowtail flags featured 13 red and white stripes with a blue canton bearing 34 gold-painted stars and were intended for cavalry and mounted troops; light artillery field companies also used them.
Due to the large quantity produced, the 1862 pattern remained in circulation after the war, used by US Cavalry including Custer at Little Big Horn.
