I first saw him after the war right after the war and came to Hanover looking for his people. He said he had been in the army and had been to Louisville, Ky. looking for his people, found them gone, got on this trail, and came to Hanover, Ind. where he found his father and mother and brothers, and I was living at Hanover at the time, and I saw him right away and recognized him at once, for I principally raised that boy and I knew he was William Gibson, slave of Gip Mallory, who ran away

Well, the reason his name is William Gibson he went by name of his father William Gibson, who belonged to Gip Mallory , and was my fellow servant and he died at Hanover years ago, but his son, young William Gibson, now of Hanover, Ind., ran away from Gip Mallory when he was a boy - not more than 14 or 15 years old when he ran away - too young to go himself and he was helped away by some abolitionist man, and escaped to Canada - Chatham something, he has told me, and when the war broke out he went to some sea-coast town and enlisted and was out in the war he told me. No, sir, he never told me what name he served under.

I am very old - don't know age; my post-office address is 750 Presbyterian Ave[nue], Madison, Jefferson Co[unty], Indiana.

I was born & left V[irgini]a when a boy. I belonged to Gip Mallory who married Sarah Taylor of Kentucky and then he brought us from Va. - seven weeks road travel - and he settled us in Shelby Co. K[entuck]y right on line of Jefferson Co., Ky in which is Louisville. There is no other man living around here, or other person, who, with me, belonged to Gip Mallory except William Gibson who lives at Hanover, this county.

On this 11th day of March, 1899, at Madison, county of Jefferson, State of Indiana, before me, A.J. Green, a special examiner of the Bureau of Pensions, personally appeared Alfred Buckner, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says:
