A[nswer]: yes, of rheumatism, but his wounds I don't know anything about. He has complained to me of rheumatism about 15 years, as near as I can guess at

I cannot swear how long after I came here after my service before I got acquainted with John Sanders or William Gibson or this man present, but within six months, I feel pretty certain, I first met him and that was the first time that I ever knew or heard of the man in my life. He soon afterwards went in some U.S. regular service - but I don't know his Co. or reg[imen]t in it.

Q[uestion]: Did he have any disease on his first acquaintance with you within six months, as you say, of your discharge?

A[nswer]: I don't know.

Q: Had he any wounds or injury at that time?

A: I couldn't tell you. I don't know. It would take somebody who knows more about it than me to tell you.

Q: Has he complained of any disease since then?

I served in Co[mpany] D, 28" U[nited] S[tates] C[olored] V[olunteer] Inf[antry] about two and half years from sometime in 1863 - don't know month of enlistment or year of discharge.

I was born and raised in Kentucky and I never lived here or visited here until my discharge after the war was over. I cannot say for I do not know that he was - that John Sanders, the man present, who also has gone by the name of William Gibson, was here on my return from the army or on my coming here after I was discharged for I was never here before I went into the service to return here after.

DEPOSITION C

Case of William Gibson alias John Sanders, No. 648,529.

On this 10th day of March, 1899, at Hanover, county of Jefferson, State of Indiana, before me, A.J. Green, a special examiner of the Bureau of Pensions, personally appeared Jesse Hays, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says:

I am 70 years of age; my post-office address is Hanover, Jefferson Co[unty], Indiana.
