In the matter of Pension Claim of Emma Rice widow of Joseph J. Rice

On this 15th day of July, A.D. 1901, personally appeared before me, a Notary Public within and for the County and State aforesaid, duly authorized to administer oaths, Joseph Smith, aged 59 years, a resident of Camden, in the County of Camden, and State of New Jersey, whose Post Office address is 1833 South 9th Street Camden, and Eliza L. Brown, aged 53 years, a resident of Camden, in the County of Camden, and State of New Jersey, who Post Office address is 924 B[TBD]er Street, Camden, well known to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows:

I, Joseph Smith, have known Emma Rice Widow of Joseph Rice since Boyhood she married S[TBD] McGuire her first husband before the War she lived with him until his death about 1865 she had never been married before she married him; after the war she married Joseph Rice and lived with him until he died on the 3rd of July 1897 and she has not married again since. We lived neighbors together for a great many years.

I, Eliza L. Brown, have known Emma Rice Widow of Joseph Rice since childhood and we grew up together and I remember when she married her first husband McGuire she lived with him until his death about 4 years. She had not been married before she married [TBD], after the War she married Joseph Rice and lived happy with him until his death 1897. She has not married again since then.
