According to Matthew's obituary he was Deacon of the Congregational Church and was 97 years old when he died. "He was born in England--sailed with the fleet commanded by Wolfe to the Siege of Quebec--was subsequently stationed at Halifax, whence he escaped and settled at Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, Me. About 1768 he removed to Durham, Androscoggin, Me where he remained till his death, universally respected and beloved. In a season of religious interest in 1815, he hoped he received, through Christ's blood, forgiveness of sin; connected himself with the church, and well sustained till death his Christian profession. His last and painful sickness was borne with holy submission and cheerful faith. It was instructive to be by his bedside and, at the close, to witness the calmness and holy triumph with which an old, experienced Christian could die."
