Biography

John, son of Joseph (Peter) and Hannah (Deane) Aspinwall, was born probably in New York City, in 1705 or 1706. He went with his parents to Saybrook, Ct., and thence to Dedham, Mass. When a young man, he returned to New York and settled there. He went to sea and became a captain of vessels out of the port of New York. He was also a merchant in that city. He amassed quite a fortune, and retired to his country seat at Flushing, on Long Island about 1758. On October 8, 1735, he was elected an alderman in New York City. He was one of the founders of the New York (Society) Library, in 1753. From 1756 to 1760, he was a vestryman of Trinity Church. Was made a member of the Marine Society, April 12, 1772.

In Flushing, he became active within the small congregation of St. George's Episcopal Church, led by newly installed Rev. Samuel Seabury, Jr. who was at that time conducting services in three different locations (Jamaica, Newtown and Flushing). John Aspinwall got Mr. Treadwell to become a lay reader, and thus services could be held each Sunday. Mr. Treadwell and Mr. Aspinwall also established a Latin school. By 1760, the church interior had been refurbished and furnished, and a steeple added with a brand new bell, all at Mr. Aspinwall's direction and expense. John Aspinwall was appointed warden in 1761 along with Thomas Grenell.

He married, August 28, 1728, Sarah, daughter of Capt. James and Sarah (Cornell) Sands of Oyster Bay. She died in 1765. They had one daughter, Hannah, together. He married for his second wife Rebecca Smith with whom he had six more children. John Aspinwall died in New York, July 5, 1774. He was buried in St. George's Episcopal Church Graveyard.

Revising my opinion a bit: John Aspinwall did not become active in the Flushing Church until about 1758, well past the marriage date but prior to her death and his marriage to Rebecca. St. George's Hempstead is back on in my mind, and the reference to Oyster Bay in the Marriage Records may have been a clerical misunderstanding - i.e. that may be only a reference to where the Sands family lived.

Hi - New York Marriages says that Sarah Sands and John Aspinwall got married in Oyster Bay. On this page, I see they got married in St. George's Episcopal in Hempstead. Somewhere else I read that they got married in St. George's Episcopal in Flushing. There are two St. George's, one n Hempstead, and one in Flushing; both are historic landmarks, and both established by the time of their marriage. Aspinwall is known to have had a "country seat" in Flushing I realize that the borders of towns we might find familiar today were significantly different back then; even so, 1 - the Hempstead church seems very far away from either Flushing or Sands Point. and 2 - the clincher for me, the Flushing church received donations from John Aspinwall, per Wikipedia entry. Thoughts?
