Biography

Margaret Cecil was the daughter of Richard Cecil, esq, of Burghley by his wife Jane Heckington. Richard and Jane had one son, Queen Elizabeth's famous William Cecil Baron Burghley, and they had three daughters: Agnes (or Anne or Anneys) who married Thomas White of Wallingwells, Woodhead and Tuxford; Elizabeth who married Robert Wingfield and Hugh Allington; and this Margaret. It is not known to me the order of the daughters, nor even any good birthyears for any of the three, but she was the last married, which may indicate she was the youngest. By the date of her children's birth's, this Margaret had to have been between 1522 and 1547, and she was probably born at Bourne in Lincolnshire.

Marriages and Issue

According to the Johnson reference, Margaret married three times, to Roger Cave, Sir William Skipworth and Erasmus Smith. The Marriage to Skipworth is however disputed by some researchers, who suggest Skipworth married her daughter Margaret Cecil.

Margaret married first Sir Roger CAVE of Stamford, on 24 November 1561 at Cecil House, the Strand, London.[1] The marriage was entered in the register of St Clement Danes, London, the parish in which Cecil House was located.[2]

Note that Jon Culverhouse, Manager, Burghley, writes that "Margaret was married twice, firstly to Roger Cave and secondly to Ambrose<sic> Smith of Bosworth." Dr. Elisabeth Leedham-Green, Deputy Keeper, Cambridge University Archives, writes: "As to connection [of Rev. Henry SMITH] with William Cecil: here I find myself in difficulty. I have used Barron's Northamptonshire families (1906) which is the source Lord David Cecil gives for the Cecil pedigree and which I therefore take to be probably correct. According to Barron, William's sister Margaret married first Roger Cave of Stamford, Esq., who died 1586, and by whom she had 6 children: Thomas, William, Cecil, John, Frances and Dorothy. She then married, as his second wife, Erasmus Smith of Bosworth, Leics., who had issue by his first wife, but none by Margaret."

The inscription on her parents’ funeral monument in St Martin’s, Stamford names her husbands as Roger Cave and Ambrose Smith.[3]

According to Order of the Crown of Charlemagne line in volume II of Pedigrees, Margaret and Roger were parents of Margaret Cave, who married Sir William SKIPWITH, son of Henry SKIPWITH, Esq. and Jane (HALL) NEAL. No evidence has been seen that states that Margaret (CECIL) SMITH had a son named Henry.

Bio of Daughter

MARGARET CAVE (d. 1588+)
Margaret Cave was the daughter of Roger Cave (d. July 26, 1586) and Margaret (or Mary) Cecil (d. March 19, 1552/3). She is included here mostly because she is so often confused with her mother and then, in some cases, said to be a daughter of William Cecil, Lord Burghley and his second wife, Mildred Cooke. Margaret Cave’s mother was Burghley’s sister, not his daughter. Margaret herself married Sir William Skipwith of Coates (c.1564-May 3, 1610), by whom she had a son, Henry Skipwith. Some genealogies give her a second husband named Erasmus Smith. Others give her mother a second husband named Ambrose Smith. Neither seems likely, since in both cases these women were outlived by their first (and apparently only) husbands.[4]

Burleigh-110 and Cecil-1 are not ready to be merged because: My comment from yesterday still stands.

Burleigh-110 and Cecil-1 are not ready to be merged because: Although there appear to be errors with Burleigh-110, I am not at all convinced they are the same person.

Burleigh-110 and Cecil-1 appear to represent the same person because: Cecil is the correct LNAB
Cecil-968 and Cecil-1 appear to represent the same person because: Use birth date and all other details on Cecil-1. Sources added to son Cecil of Margaret (Cecil) Cave and Cecil's wife Elizabeth Markham, confirming that Cecil's parents are Roger Cave by Margaret sister of Lord Burleigh (sic). Thanks for reviewing.

Thanks for postponing the merge below Steve. It would be great if you could add any other sources you have to Burleigh-110. The only one on there says the wife of Roger Cave is Elizabeth, sister of Lord Burleigh. I had taken that to refer to William Cecil, who was Lord Burghley or Burleigh. There is also a discrepancy over the name Margaret or Elizabeth. I am also happy to take the discussion to the England project for their expertise if that would be helpful.

Burleigh-110 and Cecil-1 are not ready to be merged because: I have never been convinced that these were the same woman. That they are both given as the wife could be separate wives. That they are both given as the mother could merely show confusion as to which is the genetic mother. For instance one could have died post-partum and the other brought up the daughter as though she was hers. Until this has been resolved I suggest they should stay as an Unmerged Match.

Burleigh-110 and Cecil-1 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate wife of Roger Cave and mother of Elizabeth (Cave) Bagot. See notes on previous merge of Burleigh-237. Thanks for reviewing.

Burleigh-273 and Cecil-1 appear to represent the same person because: Same daughter, same husband. Estimated birth details only. Different surname due to Collins peerage source (sister of William Lord Burleigh), difference in first name also a Collins peerage source issue, but apparrently an error. Suggest use Cecil-1 details. Thanks for merging.

Regarding the rejected merge, please read bio of Daughter below, Cecil-79 had the wrong parents as reflected in that note, and both Cecil-79 and Cecil-1 are married to Erasmus Smith (Cecil-1 x3!) which probably also needs to be fixed. Thanks!
