Biography

Philippa was baptised at St Mary Reigate in Surrey on 16 June 1600 as the daughter of "Captain Throgmorton and Mris Dority his wife, daughter of Mr Edmond Sanders of Flanchford" [1]

Her father was Lieutenant-Governor of Vlissingen (Flushing), and commander of the fortress at Rammekens, and later died at the Siege of Breda, Netherlands (circa 1624/5).[2]

Philippa married Ferdinando Carey (1590-1638) - son of Sir Edmund Carey - before August 1618 which is when their first child, Philip, was born in the Netherlands.

There are baptisms recorded in Bergen Op Zoom, Noord-Brabant for five children of Philippa and Ferdinando :

  1. Philip in 1618 ;
  2. daughter Aeltken in 1618 ;
  3. Edmund in 1619 ;
  4. Anna in 1620
  5. Philippa in 1625

Plus [2]

  1. Philadelphia Carey, Baroness Wentworth
  2. Elisabeth (Carey) Staunton, who married Francis Staunton

The Will of Philippa's uncle, Thomas Josselin', which was made 4th August 1635 [3] refers to "diverse sums of money" which Thomas has been trusted with "for the use and benefit of .. Dame Phillipp Carey wife of Sir Ferdinando Carey and her children".

According to a letter from Mr Garrard to Lord Strafford dated May 10 1638, Ferdinando, Philippa's husband, 'died suddenly of a lethargy'.
