James Hickok, son[1] of Aaron Hickok, was born about 1778 in Connecticut.[1][2]
He moved to Pittsford, Rutland Co., Vermont.[1]
James married Polly Oakes.[1]
After the birth of ?, they moved to Troy, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania in 1809.[1]
"The bill to organize [Bradford C]ounty for judicial purposes was reported favorably January 11, 1812, passed by the House March 10th and by the Senate March 24th and the same day approved by Governor Snyder. The Act fixed the second Tuesday of October following, as the time when its complete organization should take effect ... James Hickok ... [u]pon the organization of the county he opened a hotel which he kept some years. He also had a fulling-mill and built the first foundry in Troy.[3] James as also a farmer on a limited scale.[4]
"In 1827 the village [of Troy] consisted of two stores, kept by Orrin P. Ballard and George Kress; two hotels, those of Vine Baldwin and Col. I. N. Pomeroy; the Case grist-mill; Elihu Newberry's blacksmith shop; a tannery operated by Calvin Dodge; and a school house. The residents were Vine Baldwin, Orrin P. Ballard, Churchill Barnes, Mrs. Aaron Case, Adrial Hebard, Dr. Almerin Herrick, Capt. James Hickok, George Kress, James Lamb, Elihu Newberry, Col. Isaac N. Pomery, Reuben Smead, Ansel Williams, Caleb Williams, Warren Williams and Joseph Wills."[3]
In 1832, on the south side of Elmira Street of Troy "there was nothing until you reached Spalding's plaster mills; this was then Hickok's gristmill."[3]
James Hickok died on 5 April 1835.[2]
Burial was at Glennwood Cemetery, Troy, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania.[2]
