@NI520@ NOTE/Burleigh #253. John Guile, b. Aug. 1 1792. [son of Elisha]
/Burleigh #249 "John Guile [son of Gideon & g.s. of Elisha], who died in 1867 leaving a son (#250) Charles, age 21 now living at No. Norwich."
>This John Guile [son of Elisha] is the one who is the father of Charles - in John's probate, Charles Henry J. Guile and his descendants are named, as wellas other descendants of John. A descendant of his brother, Palmer, suppliedBurleigh with a chart of all descendants of Palmer. For the eldest brother,Gideon, he referred to Mrs. Lois Lattimer of No. Norwich; for the youngestbrother, John, he referred to "Mrs. E. R. Titus a daughter aged about 84, stillliving at North East, Erie Co. PA"; and for Sophia, "Lost - married & moved toOhio (Ashtabula)." Letter to Charles Burleigh NEHGS file, from Mrs. E. R. Titus, North East, PA- Sep. 8 1909 - "Mr. Demois, [Allentown, Pa] Dear Sir - "Your letter rec, will answer the questions as best I can. We never knewbut little of my Father relatives as he seldom spoke of them. His parentsdied when he was very young I suppose was the why. Aunt Olive Gile Uncl Parmerwife told me the most that we knew. "They were very wealthy in those days great on giving dinners to theirfriends considered by those that were included to be quite an honor, but soldtheir property took continental money, before investing again the money becamevaluless & they were very poor, that wore on their mind and finely wore themout. They were buried in the North Norwich cemetery but nothing to mark theirresting place. My brother & I visited Uncle Parmer twice the last time Iremained through winter with them that was in 1856 or 7. I never saw any ofthem after that. Uncle Parmer used to tell me that I looked and acted so muchlike his mother that he could hardly keep his eyes off from me. "My fathers name was John Gile my mothers name was Martha Titus Grandfathergiven name I do not remember if I ever knew neither do I remember Grandmothersgiven name they had four children 3 sons & one daughter. The oldest sonGiddeon was 20 years old when Uncl Parmer was born then Aunt Sophia, then myfather John. I do not remember his wifes name only Polly Uncle Parmer wifesname was Olive I think it was Benett. The Giles came from Conecticut. Mrs.Lattimore mother was Uncle Giddeon daughter Uncle had 3 children a son & twodauthers. I cant recall Aunt Sophia's husband name she was twice married had 4daughters I know nothing of any of them now. What one of Uncle Parmes'schildren is your wife a decendant he had a son & two daughter I remember. Iknow nothing of Elias Bennett. "I do not remember very much of any of them. / Yours in haste Mrs. E. R. Titus / North East, PA" --------------------------------- John's probate in 1867 was remarkable in that there were listed over $20,000in mortgages and notes due him - which relates to the letter above. History of Chenango Co. p. 341, shows John Gile was an initial subscriber tothe stock of the Eagle Hotel Co. and was one of the trustees of the Co. Through the 1850 census was living at Plymouth, near his eldest son, Lewis.By 1855 was at No. Norwich where he m. 2nd, Catherine Snyder.
 !1820 Plymouth, Chenango Co. NY head John Gile 201110/10100 - interpretingthis, it matches Palmer being 26-45, John 16-26, the 2 males under 10 beingJohn's Lewis and Palmer's Elisha; females 1 under 10 being Palmer's Elizabeth,and the female 16-26 being John's wife Martha. Far out!
 !1840 and 1850 census Plymouth, Chenango, NY under name "Guile". Says b. CT.
 !1850 census, Plymouth, Chenenago Co. NY age 58, b. CT name John Guile, withw. Martha 55 b. NY, also shown were Almira Scott age 10, b. NY; Henry Guile age15 b. NY and Almira Guile age 25 b. NY.
 !1855 census No. Norwich, Chenango Co. NY name John Gile, farmer, born Conn.1792, single in 1804, died 1867 - wife Catherine Snider b. Arabia, Wayne Co.1826, m. 5/10/1855 1 child married by H. P. Jones, Esp.
 !In Chenango Co. Will index - #A2237 1826, John is called son in law, MarthaTitus is daughter. Conclude this is will of James Titus, father of Martha.
 !Descendant of Elisha (unknown) says regarding John - "Mrs. E. R. Titus adaughter aged about 84 still living at North East Erie Co. Pa. can give youthis date [of birth]" (From Burleigh NEHGS file.) (Her subsequent lettersdated 1909.)
 !Descendant of Elisha (unknown) says regarding John - "Mrs. E. R. Titus adaughter aged about 84 still living at North East Erie Co. Pa. can give youthis date [of birth]" From this, the year 1792 would appear correct. Stilldoubt that both Elisha and son Gideon had son John b. same date.
 !Letter to Charles Burleigh NEHGS file, from Mrs. E. R. Titus, North East, PA -Sep. 8 1909 - "Mr. Demois, [Allentown, Pa] Dear Sir - Your letter rec, will answer the questions as best I can.  !Second letter to above - "North East Pa, / Oct. 11, 1909 Mr. Demois / Allentown, Pa / Dear Sir - Your letter came to hand in due time & perused with pleasure & interest. Amglad to know that my father had so many realitives think he knew little or ornothing of his relatives save Uncle Parmer & Aunt Sophia for years he knewnothing of her whereabout by accident he learned that she lived in AshtabulaOhio. She spent one winter with us dont remember of her talking about hisparentage. The most I remember what Aunt Olive told me if she told me thenames of my grandparents it has entirely gone from me. I cannot recall inreading all the names does not bring anything to memory. It seems a wonder tome that I did not interest my self & try to learn more of my father's people. Have lost all trace of Uncle Parmer family while Mrs. Sherwood lived thatwas Eliza Gile Uncles oldest daughter lived we kept up a correspondence afterher death it seemed to drop. It was hard for uncle or Auntie to write so havelost all trace of all of them. Often think does any of them still live. Abby Ann the youngest daughtermarried a Baker had quite a family if I remember right. When reading yourletter it came to me what Hoesne(?) wife name was. Had entirely forgoten. Iremember having a very plesant time with them all the winter I spent with them. I am the only one left of our family - all went home to Glory years ago & leftme behind alone - a few more risings & settings of the sun I too shall join thehappy band never more to past(?) With kind regards to you & family I remain Mrs. E. R. Titus / North East Pa."

 !Hugh Swofford Sr. research - "Surrogate's office, Norwich, Chenango Co. NY -John Guile - July 8 1867 - N295."

(Rin #5499)Willie could be son of 2nd m. of 1855, where John was m. Catherine. Listed innext line in index, where a man is named and next line normally his wife.
 !STRANGE - Burl. #249 (Rin #521) is John Guile b. 1 Aug 1792 Preston to GideonGuile. Studied it for several hours 1/22/96 and concluded there were two John,1 b. 1792, and his uncle b. 1793/4.! Received probate 8/96 which showsBurleigh #249 is error - if Gideon had a son, it was not the John who d. 1867.
 !Family records from letter from Mrs. E. R. Titus 1909, niece of Gideon,indicate that the John b. 1792 was her father, the youngest brother of Gideonand her mother was Martha Titus. The following censuses show that John andMartha were in Chenango Co. and clearly the one who died 1867. In 1850, itwould appear that Henry 10 and Almira 25 were their children, Almira Scott 10not identified. Also in Plymouth in 1850 was their eldest son Lewis 34 and hisfamily.
 !Eunice Scott Barrow of San Antonio, TX - letter 4/29/1996 - "I have obtainedcopies of the 1867 probate of John Gile, Norwich, NY. His wife was Catherine.This family is connected, somehow, to a daughter of one of my Scotts. AlmiraScott was in the home of the Guile/Gile family and married a Beckwith. A womanwho is researching the Beckwith family lives in Austin, TX." Received them 8/28/96 - names Catherine as Executrix, so this is the one.Names Heirs at Law - "Alvira Hall who resides in the town of Sherman in thecounty of Chautauqua, NY; Charles Henry J. Gile, Ruamia Frink and Edwin J. Gilewho severally reside in the town of North Norwich in the County of Chenango NY;Julia A. Brown who resides in the town of Sherburne in the said County ofChenango, and Almira Beckwith who resides in the town of Guilford in saidcounty of Chenango.
