Biography

Mary was a daughter of Edward Smith and Elizabeth Grant. She was married in 1818 in Stonington, Connecticut to Joel Dunham, a son of Elijah Dunham and Elizabeth Fitz Randolph.

Mary and Joel resided in Middlesex County, New Jersey. She was widowed in 1879 when Joel passed away. She afterward resided with her daughter Elizabeth (Dunham) Merritt, in who's Brooklyn, New York home she was enumerated in 1880. Mary's transcribed death record indicates she passed away in 1890 in Bayonne, Hudson, New Jersey which was Bergen County at the time of her death.

She has been assigned two differing birth years per Henry A. Smith's "A Genealogical History of the Descendants of the Rev. Nehemiah Smith of New London County, Connecticut" which offers Oct. 7, 179__, vs. Isaac W. Dunham's "Dunham Genealogy" which offers Oct. 17, 1800, with neither citing a primary source. The latter date is supported by all census enumerations of Mary and her death record at the age of 89 years, which is on her grave marker.
