There is a picture of "Ash, antient seat of the Drakes," A watercolor dated 13 February 1795 by Rev. John Swete. This is the house rebuilt by Sir John Drake, 2nd Baronet (1647-1684) after near destruction during the Civil War. The building at left is a chapel.[1]
Gilbert Drake, of Exmouth & Ashe:
Ash is in the parish of Musbury in the county of Devon, England. Its a historic estate where the ancient Drake family have resided for a long time. The Drake family of Devon is in a "very old deed" and is quoted by Wescote (from Greek as [drakon] was Latinized form of home "Drake" which means in Latin "dragon" {which is referred to in the family's canting arms}.)
During the Civil War, Ash was burnt and "demolished" and lay in ruins for a long time, during that time the family moved to Trill, which was one mile away. The Ash home was rebuilt, only to a greater perfection by Sir John Drake, 2nd Baronet (1647-1684). Th last of the male line was Sir William Drake, 6th Baronet (about 1695-1733).
The Drake family of Ash rejected a claim by Admiral Sir Francis Drake (about 1540-1596) of Buckland Abbey, whom was considered by them to be below the rank of gentry. He was then descended from the ancient Drake family of Ash, and then there was a famous physical confrontation that started out in the court of Queen Elizabeth, I between Admiral Sir Bernard Drake (about 1537-1586) of Ash and Admiral Sir Francis Drake of Buckland Abbey when the latter made claim to the armorials of Drake of Ash.[1]
