Biography

When Elizabeth was about 40 she married Wiley Payne on 4 February 1841 in Tipton County, TN. The couple had one child: John Wiley Payne.

Elizabeth died at the age of about 59 between 1860 and 1870 in Tipton County, Tennessee, United States.

Research Notes

Note: In a letter to his nephew, Daniel Millar in Texas dated October 30, 1841, Banyan Payne states "Your uncle Willey has lost his wife & is married again. He has six children all boys. There names is Darling. Banyan. Daniel. William, Albert & Benjamin. Your uncle Willey married Thomas Adkins widow, & is doing very well."

The above information regarding the identity of Elizabeth Adkins' husband led to a search on Ancestry which uncovered the fact that "Thomas Adkins married Elizabeth Marable, September 23, 1828 in Sussex County, VA". Thomas' birthdate was given at about 1803, and children born to Elizabeth Marable and Thomas Adkins were listed on one family tree as being Susan M. Adkins, b. 1832 and Thomas Benjamin Adkins, born 1834.

In the 1850 census, Wiley Payne's widow Elizabeth, age 49 was living with her son by Wiley (John Wiley Payne, b. 1841) in the household of John (age 24) and Susan M. McLennan (or McLeman) (age 18) along with son Thomas Adkins, age 15. They are living next door to Henry Adkins, age 55, from Virginia (a possible brother to Elizabeth's deceased husband). Susan McLennan is most probably Elizabeth's daughter by her previous marriage.

For the 1860 census in Tipton County, Elizabeth Payne and son John Wiley are still living in the household of Susan and John McLennan (only this time the census taker gave their name as McLlellan -- but it is the same people). By now, however, John Wiley Payne has married a woman with the initials "M.V.". Susan and John McLennan have five children by this time.

Elizabeth Payne cannot be found on the 1870 census, so I am assuming she has died sometime between the census years.
