Biography
Leslie Maurice was born with the surname Alford as he was the illegitimate son of mother Bertha Alford. [1]
In 1934 Leslie married Rose Andrews. Their marriage was registered in Middlesbrough. [2]
In 1939 Rose and Leslie lived in Middlesbrough with (potentially) 2 children. Leslie was a barman. [3]
Leslie died in 1967 at the General Hospital, Easton. His home had been 20 Granville Road, Middlesbrough. Probate went to his widow Rose Edna. [4]
Research Note: It has not been possible to track down Leslie's parents. they weren't married when he was born and there is no record of a Bertha marrying someone with the surname Woodward. However, there were some Bertha Woodwards, but none are found with Leslie. the only census including a Leslie was a James Woodward in 1911, when he was married to Louisa (nee Ife). Louisa and James married in 1900 and claimed Leslie was their only child. Perhaps Leslie was adopted.
