As Gregory had at least one child, one can be certain he married before 1178 and was, therefore, born before 1164. A charter by King WIlliam the Lion written between 1165 and 1170, does little to help estimate his age but does further affirm he was living in that period.[3] His son William, however, is estimated to have been old enough to do battle in 1174 so was certainly born before 1158 and implies that Gregory was married before 1157 and was born before 1143.
