Gabriel (Sempill) Sempill IIIrd of Cathcart is a member of Clan Sempill. |
Gabriel was the son of Gabriel Semple and Jonete Spreule.[1]
He married Margaret Lindsay prior to 26 Jun 1534.[1] They had issue:
In Jan 1540/1 the Crown confirmed a charter to William Sempill, eldest son and heir-apparent of Gabriel Sempill of Ladymure and Jonet Spreule his spouse, lords in conjunct fee, and Mariote Kircaldy spouse of the said William, of the ancient lands of Cragbait, Tor and Thripley in Renfrewshire, which Gabriel and Jonet resigned. Reserving the usual liferents for them.[2] William subsequently assigned the above lands to his brother-german [this] Gabriel Sempill and his spouse Margaret Lindsay on 12th January 1550/1, at Glasgow.[3] (See below)
On the 23rd March 1543/4 at Cathcart, Gabriel Sempill of Cathcart with the consent of his spouse Jonete Spreule, conjunct lords of the feu which is the subject of the charter, confirmed to John Sempill, their second son, the barony of Cathcart, castle and fortalice, castle-lands etc., and to his wife Mariote Lyndsay the lands of Langside, and their heirs failing whom to [this] Gabriel, son of the said Gabriel senior etc. Amongst the witnesses was Robert Sempill, son of Gabriel senior.[4]
The Crown confirmed a charter (following a retour) dated at Glasgow on 12th January 1550/1 of [this] Gabriel Sempill of Cathcart, brother-german and heir of entail to John Sempill, to their brother-german William Sempill, his heirs etc., of the Cathcart entail (list of all lands etc) witnessed by Henry Gibson, Master David Gibson, Master James Blair, notaries public, John Pollock of that Ilk, Thomas Spreule of Colden, Walter Spreule in Arthurlie.[5]
Gabriel Sempill [no territorial designation given] was a witness on 1st August 1561, at Edinburgh, to a feu charter of Patrick Hepburn and his spouse Helen Hamilton.[6]
Gabriel Sempill [no territorial designation given] was one of the witnesses to a feu charter dated at Norham-on-Tweed on 23rd March, 1563, by James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell, Lord Hailes, Creichtoun & Liddesdale, to Robert Carnegie of Kinnaird of certain lands in the Lordship of Creighton.[7]
Gabriel Semple is said to have died before 24 March 1572/73[1] before his brother William.
It is debateable that this Gabriel should be designated "of Cathcart" given that as soon as the lands were settled upon him (following his brother John's death) he resigned them to his brother William in return for a settlement of William's Craigbait holdings.
