Second son. Mentioned in his father's Testament. "Adam Hepburn of Smeaton was granted by his father in 1538 the lands of Smeaton and other lands. He was a devoted adherent of Mary Queen of Scots, whom he joined after the escape from Loch Leven; he was present at the battle of Langside, and, with other of his relatives received as summons for treason."[1]
"In the year 1549 this Adam Hepburn of Smeaton made a resignation of the half of the lands of Craig, into the hands of Patrick Hepburn of Bolton, superior thereof; for a new charter in favour of himself in feu, and his mother Helen Hepburn, relict of the deceased Sir Patrick Hepburn of Waughton, in liferent. In which instrument he is again designed 'Adamus Hepburn, filius legitimus quondam Patricii hepburn de Waughtoun militis'; the witnesses are, 'Patrico Hepburn de Waughton, fratre germano dicti Adae, Henrico Hepburn ejus avunculo'."[2]
Adam bought the lands of Haugh [today: Prestonkirk] from his half-brother George in 1562.
