Willis Fred Weeden ?41, a retired physician and surgeon, long prominent in the Canandaigua, NY, community, was born on March 5, 1920, in Frankfort, not far from Utica. A son of George Roger Weeden, an insurance agent, and the former Helen Fish, he was a grandson of Willis L. Weeden, Class of 1882. He followed his older brother, Roger, to College Hill in 1937, after his graduation from Frankfort High School. On the Hill, ?Bill? Weeden managed to combine demanding premedical studies with active participation in athletics as well as student government. He played varsity basketball for three years and football for four, despite temporary interruptions caused by ankle and knee injuries. A member of Delta Upsilon, he was elected president of his sophomore class and served on the Student Council in his senior year. Tapped for all four class honoraries, Quadrangle, DT, Was Los, and Pentagon, he was graduated in 1941.
Before entering the University of Rochester School of Medicine in the fall of that year, Bill Weeden spent the summer working a 12-hour shift making machine guns at Savage Arms in Utica. His medical studies accelerated because of World War II, he earned his M.D. degree in 1944. On November 18 of that year, while serving his internship, he was wed to Janet Edam in Rochester. By 1945, he was on active duty with the U.S. Navy. He served as a medical officer on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific theater, not long before the Japanese surrender and the war?s end.
Released from the Navy as a lieutenant in 1946, Bill Weeden returned to Rochester and completed its surgical residency program. However, in 1952 he was recalled by the Navy to serve for the duration of the Korean War. Released once again in 1954, he established his practice of general surgery in Canandaigua, in New York?s Finger Lakes region. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he became attending surgeon in charge of the surgical staff as well as president of the medical staff at F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua. He also served part-time as an associate professor of surgery at Rochester?s medical school and was a director of Rochester Blue Cross and Blue Shield and of the Genesee Valley Medical Service.
In addition, Dr. Weeden made a variety of contributions to the Canandaigua community, including service as president of its board of education. In 1969, he joined the board of directors of the Canandaigua National Bank & Trust Co. and helped guide it through its formation as a bank holding company. He was named director emeritus following 26 years of distinguished service to the bank in 1995.
Bill Weeden, who retired from his surgical practice in 1986, found pleasure in gardening and golfing. He also enjoyed fishing from the dock fronting his home on Canandaigua Lake. His retirement years were enriched by the close family ties and the proximity of his grandchildren.
Long in ill health, Willis F. Weeden, a devoted alumnus, died at his home in Canandaigua on July 9, 2006. In addition to his wife of over 60 years, he is survived by a son, Willis F. Weeden, Jr. ?70; two daughters, Debra Pasternack and Barbara Pasley; and seven grandchildren and nieces and nephews including Stephen H. Applegate ?74. Dr. Weeden predeceased by six weeks his brother, G. Roger Weeden, Jr. ?39, whose memorial biography will appear in the next issue of the Alumni Review.

He gave his time and talents to serve his community.
CANANDAIGUA When Dr. Willis Weeden Jr. spoke at his fathers funeral, he quoted from Alfred Lord Tennysons Ulysses I am a part of all I have met.
Never was a phrase so aptly applied to a man as it was that day, friends and family say.
Dr. Willis F. Weeden Sr. who served as a medical professional, an advocate for education and a community steward on the Canandaigua National Bank and Trust board of directors died July 9 at his home with his family.
Those who knew him well, such as Dr. Collins Connie Carpenter, have no trouble finding words of praise for the consummate professional and trusted friend, known to many as Dr. Bill.
Recalling Friday afternoons spent together reading and talking, Carpenters wide smile lights his face.
We did a lot of talking ... we talked about old times, Carpenter said. But mostly, we read. Thats a nice memory for me, Ill tell ya.
The pair met when Dr. Weeden was a surgical resident at Highland Hospital in Rochester and was serving a portion of his residency at the old F. F. Thompson Hospital on North Main Street. Dr. Weeden Sr. was a graduate of Hamilton College and of the University of Rochester Medical School.
Dr. Weeden had served with the U.S. Navy as a medical officer during World War II in the Pacific Theater. When the Korean War began, he was called back into the Navy for a second tour of duty, this time stationed in Jacksonville, Fla. In 1954, Dr. Weeden and his family came back to Canandaigua and he established a surgical practice with fellow surgeon George Holton.
Dr. Weeden Sr. was a gifted and dedicated board-certified general surgeon, according to Carpenter, an oral surgeon who shared an office building with Dr. Weeden and four other doctors for some 30 years on Brooks Street in Canandaigua.
Carpenter laughed as he recalled all of the doctors working in shifts in a building that was not quite big enough for everyone.
We all stayed 30 years, Carpenter recalled, his smile widening once more at the thought. We all got along very well, were very congenial, and I never remember a hard feeling or a cross word.
Dr. Weeden Sr. was a member of the American College of Surgeons and an associate professor of surgery at the University of Rochester School of Medicine.
During the approximately 50 years he lived in Canandaigua, Dr. Weeden Sr. also served on the boards of Rochester Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Genesee Valley Medical Service. He was past president of the Canandaigua school board and a member of Canandaigua Rotary Club, Merrill Hose Fire Co. and the First Congregational Church.
Dr. Weeden Sr.s contribution to education was immeasurable, according to John Skawski, former superintendent of the Canandaigua school district and close friend.
Dr. Bill was very instrumental in my coming to Canandaigua in 1968, Skawski recalled in a telephone interview from his home in Dryden.
Dr. Weeden was elected to the school board in the early 1963, when overcrowding at the high school on North Main Street made it necessary for the administration to undertake the arduous task of constructing a new high school on Granger Street.
When he ran for school board, Dr. Weeden Sr. summed up his philosophy this way:
It is my belief that the public school system is the first and by far the most important phase in the development of democratic principles and ideals in the future citizens of our country. Establishing and maintaining excellence in our educational system is indispensable for the continued survival and growth of our American way of life.
Skawski not only admired Dr. Weeden Sr. as a medical professional and an advocate for education, but as a friend and skillful bridge partner and golfer.
Well miss him very, very much, Skawski said. He was a gentleman of the highest standards in all aspects of his life.
George Hamlin IV, president and CEO of Canandaigua National Bank, knew Dr. Weeden Sr. for much of Hamlins life. The man took my tonsils out, for goodness sakes, Hamlin said with a laugh.
Dr. Weeden had been serving on the bank board for seven years when Hamlin, at that time a lawyer, came to the bank in 1979.
He put Thompson Hospital on the map, Hamlin said, referring to Dr. Weedens certification and experience. His death is not about our loss, but about the gain we all appreciate for having the good luck to have known him. He continues to influence us by example. I didnt know his mother, but she sure did raise a wonderful son.
For Dr. Weeden Sr., family was especially important. He loved sports, the lake, gardening, planting trees on his property and fishing with his children.
Son Dr. Weeden Jr. said his father saw something special in everybody and made them feel that he saw something special in them. He was without pretense, his son said.
Dr. Weeden Sr.s daughter, Barbara Pasley, said her fathers smile was a great equalizer. Daughter Debra Pasternack recalled her fathers penchant for finding just the right story to tell his grandchildren, depending on the circumstance and what he thought they needed to hear or learn.
Dr. Weeden Sr.s family life is exemplified by the 61 years he was married to his bride, Janet, who recalled their life and her husbands contributions to the community with humility and grace from their West Lake Road home.
Dr. Weeden Sr. had eight grandchildren. His granddaughter, Julie Pasternack, 25, spoke on their behalf at his funeral: For us grandchildren, grandpa was particularly precious. He always found a way to make us feel special, cared for and loved. To him, nothing was more important than the happiness of those around him, and his unique compassion made us all feel more at peace.
