Samuel Lloyd was the 11th and last child of Thomas Lloyd and his wife Mary (Jones) Lloyd, English Quakers fleeing religious persecution by emigrating to William Penn's new Quaker-tolerant colony of Pennsylvania in North America.[1]
Samuel was born shortly after the couple and their family landed in Philadelphia in the summer of 1683. Unfortunately, neither Samuel nor his mother long survived in the New World. They both died around November 1683 and were the first to be buried at the new Quaker cemetery in downtown Philadelphia; William Penn, himself, is said to have spoken Mary's eulogy at her burial there. Thomas Lloyd survived another 11 years, becoming a leading member of both the government and society of the new colony. [2]
