Biography
William Thornton, supposed son of William Thornton and Barbara Westby, was born before 1600 in Yorkshire, England (alt birthplace Rivington, Lancashire, England).
William Thornton is said to have married Frances Robinson and to have died about 1650.[1]
Research Notes
William has been linked to a wife, Elisia (Bellington) Thornton (1620-1646), and is said to have married her in Rappahannock, Virginia Colony. However, this is not the William Thornton who emigrated to Virginia about 1641/42 and died in Stafford County, Virginia, in 1708. The only reference found that identifies this William Thornton with the emigrant is an unsourced, undocumented, entry in the book, Thornton 1300- 1917.
- "William Thornton, gentleman, of the 'Hills,' Yorkshire, who emigrated to Virginia and settled in York county 1646, in Pentworth Parish, now Gloucester county."[2]
This William Thornton, born before 1600, could not have died in Virginia Colony in 1708.
Since he did not go to Virginia, he was also not married to Elisia (Bellington) Thornton (1620-1646). She will be unlinked as wife and may actually be wife of William Thornton Sr. (abt.1622-aft.1708), the William Thornton who did emigrate to Virginia.

See research note on William senior, unable to enter possible baptisms on here due to date conflict with mother, but I think it's pretty clear that the birthplace should be Coxwold, Yorkshire, on the evidence given.
